Job summary

The Army Aviation Centre has a vacancy within the Department of Aviation medicine. This is an exciting opportunity to become a member of the medical team at Middle Wallop, where the Army trains all its pilots, communication specialists and ground crew.

As an MOD Civil Servant at the Army Aviation Centre, you will work alongside other civilians and military personnel and be a part of the team that keeps the British Army in the air.

This position is advertised at 37.5 hours per week.

Job description

The Department consists of a team of 8 personnel, both military and civil service, covering clinical and administration functions, including airfield emergency response, occupational health screening, quality improvement and support to the primary healthcare team. The successful candidate will be one of 5 Ambulance technician posts, providing initial emergency response to airfield incidents during airfield opening hours, conducting routine clinical observations, dealing with medical appointment related enquiries either face to face, by telephone or email and conducting limited maintenance checks of medical equipment.
On the job training will be given in the use of the medical IT systems (Defence Medical Information Capability Programme (DMICP), ambulance driving and Defence policies.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Provide pre-hospital emergency care, triage and stabilise casualties up to First Responder Emergency Care (FREC) level 4 or equivalent standard.
  • Conduct regular serviceability checks of medical equipment and vehicles.
  • Conduct preliminary observations for routine occupational medical examinations including audiometry, peak flow, blood pressure, urinalysis, visual acuity, ECG and spirometry.
  • Provide treatment for minor ailments and injuries within scope of practice.
  • Manage health records maintaining Caldicott standards.
  • Contribute to assurance, governance and quality improvement activity.
  • Provide accountability for medical supplies held within emergency modules.
  • Comply with Infection prevention and control standards for the practice and ambulance.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio with reflective evidence of professional development and clinical experience.
  • Understand that bullying, harassment and discrimination are unacceptable.
  • Comply with legislation and Defence Policy on health, safety and risk management.

A C1 category driving licence is required.

Evidence of Hep B Immunity is required.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Person specification

We are looking for a practitioner with outstanding inter-personal skills, pre-hospital care experience, with the ability to conduct initial assessment of an emergency scenario. You should be able to handle your own workload, be adaptable, prioritising and reassessing as tasks are received. You will be encouraged to deliver an excellent level of evidence-based health care and administrative support, with the highest level of accuracy, be prepared to work flexibly and to contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

C1 category driving licence

Qualifications

Candidates must hold either of the below Ambulance Practitioner Qualifications:

Institute of Health and Care Development (IHCD) Ambulance Technician

First Responder Emergency Care (FREC) L4

Emergency Care Assistant

Evidence of qualification will be required at interview.
All qualifications/licences declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date.
Equivalent Qualifications will not be accepted.
