Learning and Development at Army’s Civilian Workforce
The delivery of Defence capability is dependent on the skills and capabilities of our people. We aim to raise the capability levels of civilians in Defence through supporting the development of our Professions, and by working in partnership with third party providers to supply high quality, relevant, timely and affordable learning interventions.
The MOD also aims to identify and develop those individuals with the greatest potential so they can be our future leaders. Talented individuals are assessed as having the aspiration, ability and engagement to progress to senior levels in the organisation. Diversity and Inclusion is a priority for the MOD and our talent pipeline should reflect people from all backgrounds.
The MOD takes part in Civil Service-wide schemes such as the Senior Leaders Scheme (SLS) and Future Leaders Scheme (FLS), the Fast Stream, the Positive Action Pathway and the Fast Track Apprentice Scheme as well as running its own internal schemes. Developing talented staff can also take place outside of formal schemes and all line managers are encouraged to identify and develop talent within their business areas.
The Civil Service LGBT+ mentoring programme is an initiative developed and delivered by the cross-government Civil Service LGBT+ Network to provide LGBT+ people working in the Civil Service access to mentors who are also LGBT+ and working in more senior roles. First launched in 2021, the scheme was awarded the ‘Developing and Supporting People Award’ at the Civil Service Awards the same year.
