Mentoring Opportunities Within the Civil Service

The Civil Service LGBT+ mentoring programme is an initiative developed and delivered by the cross-government Civil Service LGBT+ Network to provide LGBT+ people working in the Civil Service access to mentors who are also LGBT+ and working in more senior roles. First launched in 2021, the scheme was awarded the ‘Developing and Supporting People Award’ at the Civil Service Awards the same year.
The mentoring programme is open to all LGBT+ civil servants at any grade and will see more senior mentors paired with more junior colleagues. Mentors and mentees can be of any grade, in any profession, and staff can register to be both. This year will now see mentors and mentees paired on the basis of their specific LGBT+ characteristics.
Since the scheme first started in 2021 over 1,800 LGBT+ Civil Servants have taken part in the scheme, as mentors or mentees, with an estimated 6,000 hours of mentoring opportunities created, providing valuable development and career opportunities for the LGBT+ community.
