The Directorate consists of Civil Servants, military colleagues and contractors working closely to deliver the Armys Modernisation Agenda.

Military Capability Delivery (MCD) sits within the Directorate of Programmes and is responsible for the development of capability through-life, including upgrades and urgent operational requirements. Closely linked to UK land industrial capacity and export opportunities.

The Through Life Capability Management (TLCM) branch is part of MCD and manages the Armys capabilities and fleet design through-life, including the coherence of capability upgrades across the portfolio.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

The Engineering Standards branch ensures the safety and assurance for all land equipment and Army boats providing essential direction and coherence of policy, keeping our people safe and legally compliant.

The Engineering Standards Team supports the Chief Engineer (Army) as the Army Competent Advisor and Inspectorate (ACAI) and Service Advisor for the Army Maintenance of Land Systems and Army Boats (all equipment old and new which doesnt fly).

We offer the opportunity to investigate and provide wide ranging engineering solutions supporting the safe use of Army equipment and the safety of its people. Working independently as well as within the team, this post will give you the opportunity to make and implement change having a direct impact across the Defence enterprise.

Additionally, the successful applicant will develop their understanding of legislation, regulation and Defence policy enabling further exciting employment opportunities in a wide range of Defence organisations and locations.

Engineering Standards Team are looking for a highly motivated applicant who is able to provide engineering solutions and data to our customers both independently and as part of the team.

The successful applicant will be able to apply previous experiences in an engineering discipline and be able to communicate proposed solutions at all staffing levels.

A keen eye for detail would be beneficial when assisting in the release of Single Service Policy. Delivering projects at pace ensures a challenging environment to the correct applicant who is capable of achieving efficient outputs within the equipment care and equipment support area.

Director Programmes manages Project Delivery staff on a flexible basis to ensure programmes have the talent required to deliver outputs and maximise opportunities in support of skills development and wider career pathways. In common with all Programmes Directorate staff, the post holder may be redeployed flexibly within the portfolio as priorities change and programmes begin and end.

Person specification

The role within the Engineering Standards Branch will include some of the following responsibilities:
  • Assisting the Chief Engineer in their ACAI responsibility.
  • Providing direction and guidance in user/maintainer documentation.
  • Provide generic equipment engineering, maintenance, and safety advice to all partners.
  • Reviewing internal policy documents to ensure accuracy against changing requirements.
  • Reviewing external policy for coherence.
  • Cohere key working groups.
  • Line management for 1 EO position.

Desirable Qualifications/Membership:
  • HNC/D Engineering Discipline (or equivalent)

A Great Place for Veterans to Work scheme which was introduced by the Government in 2020 under the Veterans Strategy Action Plan which included the commitment of making the Civil Service a great Place to Work for Veterans. To be eligible for this scheme in the Civil Service, candidates must meet the minimum standard for the role being applied for and:
  • have served for at least one year in His Majestys Armed Forces (as a Regular or Reserve); this includes time spent training
  • be in transition from, or ceased to be a member of, HM Armed Forces
  • not already be a civil servant, or be employed by a Civil Service Commission accredited public body
  • There is no maximum time limit from when you left HM Armed Forces to be eligible for this initiative

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
