Job description

At Sopra Steria Aerospace, Defence & Security (ADS), we work on some of the UK's most critical Defence and National Security programmes, delivering technology solutions that help protect the UK and support those responsible for keeping our country safe.

We are looking for a DevOps & Automation Engineer to join our team, working within highly secure, technically complex environments where the work you do has a real purpose and impact.

This is an opportunity to work with a broad range of technologies, tackle challenging engineering problems and play an important role in designing, building and improving the infrastructure that underpins mission-critical services. You'll gain exposure to automation, infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices, working alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists to deliver secure, scalable and reliable solutions.

The role offers a varied mix of hands-on engineering, technical problem-solving and project delivery, giving you the opportunity to take ownership of automation initiatives, influence technical improvements and help shape how infrastructure is designed, managed and delivered.

We're equally committed to your development. Whether you're looking to deepen your expertise in automation, develop new technical skills or progress your career, you'll have access to training, development opportunities and a supportive team that encourages collaboration, knowledge sharing and continuous learning.

You'll also benefit from flexible benefits and excellent career progression opportunities within a business that offers exposure to a wide range of technologies, projects and career pathways.

Due to the secure nature of the programmes, this is an on-site role based in Gloucestershire.

What you'll be doing
  • Designing and delivering DevOps and automation solutions, helping to modernise infrastructure, improve efficiency and address complex technical challenges across secure environments.
  • Developing and implementing infrastructure as code, creating scripts, configurations and reusable automation solutions to improve consistency, reliability and scalability.
  • Building and enhancing CI/CD pipelines, working with tools such as GitLab and associated technologies to streamline deployments and support efficient, secure delivery.
  • Taking ownership of automation initiatives, from initial design and technical development through to implementation, testing and handover into operational environments.
  • Solving complex engineering challenges, troubleshooting issues across infrastructure, automation pipelines and integrated systems while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborating with and supporting other engineers, sharing technical knowledge, providing guidance and contributing ideas that strengthen DevOps practices, engineering standards and team capability.

What you'll bring
  • Strong hands-on experience in DevOps, Automation or Infrastructure Engineering, working with Microsoft Windows and Linux technologies within complex enterprise environments.
  • Practical experience of infrastructure as code and configuration management, using technologies such as Ansible, Terraform or equivalent automation tools.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills, using PowerShell, Bash or Python to develop solutions, automate repetitive tasks and improve infrastructure management.
  • Experience building, maintaining and improving CI/CD pipelines, using GitLab or similar tools to support automated builds, testing and deployment.
  • A good understanding of networking, infrastructure security and system integration, with the ability to design and implement reliable solutions within secure environments.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to take ownership of engineering challenges, work collaboratively and contribute to continuous improvement.

If you're interested in this role but not sure if your skills and experience are exactly what we're looking for, please do apply, we'd love to hear from you!
