A new Senior Scientist position has come up in the Analytical Development Department at our Stevenage, UK site. The purpose of this role is to plan, design and execute work/experimental programmes to further the course of oligonucleotide discovery and development projects and programmes to reach project milestones.

The successful candidate will have extensive expertise in mass spectrometry (LC-MS, LC-MS/MS and GC-MS) as applied to oligonucleotide analysis. In addition, some knowledge of biophysical analytical techniques (e.g. CD, UV, vibrational, etc.) and their application to oligonucleotide analysis would be preferred.

In this role you will
  • Plan, design and execute experimental programmes to further the course of oligonucleotide discovery and development projects / programmes and enable key outcomes, in particular using mass spectrometry expertise (LC-MS, LC-MS/MS and GC-MS).
  • Ensure appropriate use of mass spectrometry to define control strategies for NCE's.
  • Explore and implement innovative mass spectrometry methodology and procedures.
  • Plan and communicate effectively; identify technical or resource issues; propose solutions and strategies with team members and more senior staff.
  • Contribute to regulatory dossiers and author/review expert reports.
  • Comply with the requirements of quality, safety and GSK policies and procedures.

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • PhD, preferably in a mass spectrometry related discipline, or BSc with experience in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art high-resolution LC-MS, LC-MS/MS and GC-MS instrumentation (e.g. Q-Tof, Orbitrap) in order to provide key information for projects at all stages of pharmaceutical development, from early phase development to marketed product support, especially for oligonucleotide development
  • Proven track record of development of novel LC-MS and GC-MS methodology in the pharmaceutical or related industry

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:
  • Proven track record of structural characterisation/elucidation work for oligonucleotides by mass spectrometry - identification of impurities and degradants by mass spectrometric techniques
  • Knowledge of biophysical techniques (e.g. CD, UV, vibrational) and their use to enable understanding of the drug manufacturability, comparability and performance (e.g. diastereoisomer ratios, higher order structure (HOS))
  • Knowledge of other techniques used for analysis of oligonucleotides, e.g. NMR, denaturation temperature measurement
  • Experience optimising and/or developing chromatographic and instrument methods for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of oligonucleotides
  • Knowledge of oligonucleotide chemistry. Experience in biomolecules (oligosaccharides, RNA, DNA) sequencing
  • Knowledge of ICH guidelines, experience in regulated GxP laboratory, familiarity with regulatory submission documents
