You will have an opportunity to work with other specialists and develop policy, technical standards, and assurance activities on a wide variety of electrical systems in both the UK and overseas to ensure the MOD meets its statutory obligations and military capability.

You will provide proactive and evidenced based Technical Assurance and Expert Advice to support the acquisition, maintenance, operation, adaptation, decommissioning and disposal of HV (mainly 11 kV and up to 33 kV) electrical infrastructure in MOD Establishments.

Working as a Senior Electrical Engineer and joining an integral part of the UKs Defence will allow you to support several diverse and outstanding projects.

MODs Electrical Infrastructure range from low to high voltage distribution network (up to 33kV); and include standby and local generation systems to electrical services within accommodation, industrial, & commercial type facilities, and also include specialist facilities such as: explosive and fuel installations, shore to ship supplies, Data Centres, airfield lighting, and renewable energy systems.

There are significant ongoing programmes of works to renew and upgrade MODs electrical infrastructure; and also, to ensure MOD reduces its carbon emissions by introducing renewable energy sources to meet its Net Zero commitments. Person specification

DIO Technical Services is a multi-disciplinary team which provides technical subject-matter expertise across a wide range of disciplines to support the operation of the Defence estate and land on which the MOD operates, both in the UK and overseas. The Team provides impartial and objective Intelligent Customer Capability to DIO, MOD and wider government, supporting UK Defence outputs world-wide. The specialist skills available through the Technical Services team span construction, engineering, electronic and physical security requirements, safety systems, environmental management, sustainable development, access and recreation, historic environment, and natural environment.

The Senior Electrical Engineer will be a member of Electrical Infrastructure Team in DIO Technical Services, and will support the Head of Electrical Infrastructure Team in DIO Technical Services, who holds the technical responsibility in the following main areas:

The implementation and administration of the MODs Electrical Safe System of Work (JSP375 Volume 3 Chapter 3) including the development of the Safety Rules and Procedures.
Assurance activities on electrical system, equipment, and Safe System of Work
Development of policies and technical standards on electrical infrastructure and equipment.
Investigation of electrical incidents, accidents, and near misses and, where necessary, publication of safety alerts, technical bulletin, information notes etc.
Undertake research & development in support of the above
The representation of MOD /DIO on legislative, standardization, industry, and MOD committees in the UK and abroad.

The Senior Electrical Engineer (High Voltage) will be primarily responsible for HV (mostly 11 kV, but up to 33 kV at two or three sites) electrical infrastructure. The main tasks (but not limited to) are:
Undertaking assurance activities on MODs Safe System of Work such as - competency assessments on Authorised Engineers (AE), peer reviews on safety audit reports, technical briefs, reports, drawings, and specifications etc.
Acting as a SME or an advisor on electrical incidents / accident investigations; and if necessary, conducting or leading an investigation.
Drafting, updating, or maintaining DIO publications such as policy, technical standards, safety alerts, technical bulletins, information notes etc in the area of responsibility.
Providing technical assurance and specialist support on HV equipment and infrastructure for power supply arrangements, generation, distribution, large scale renewables as applicable to the MOD Sites.
As necessary, representing TS Electrical Team in Working Groups, Technical-Committees, Industry Forums etc in UK and abroad.

Licences:
Full UK Driving Licence - required to enable travel remote sites not easily accessible by public transport. Travel will be required for this Post (both UK and overseas travel).

Qualifications
Chartered Member or demonstratively working in order to achieve Chartered membership in Engineering Council UK through IET or CIBSE.
Student Membership in these professional organisations is also acceptable and may be assessed on their knowledge and experience in Electrical HV equipment and system through Course module, thesis or dissertation

Memberships
Membership of an appropriate Institution / Institute pertinent to electrical engineering such as: The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineer (CIBSE). Student Membership in these professional organisations is also acceptable.

Allowances

The post attracts a non-pensionable Recruitment & Retention Allowance (RRA) of 3000 per annum on top of the basic salary. The salary advertised is the minimum salary to the pay grade C1. However, higher starting pay will be offered to the candidate depending on his/her experience and knowledge or suitability for the Post.

This post does not offer any assistance with relocation allowances.
