An exciting opportunity to join a team of diverse and talented microbiologists providing microbiological technical support to the development of non-sterile and sterile drug products.

The R&D Microbiology team provide environmental monitoring support to the non-sterile Pilot Plant, perform, and develop microbiological quality testing of finished products and ensure that microbiological quality and regulatory compliance is maintained for our products, facilities, and utilities.

We are currently looking to recruit a microbiologist who is enthusiastic to develop expertise in microbial identification and take responsibility for oversight of the microbiology laboratory and equipment.

In this role you will:
  • Be responsible for performing microbial identifications using a variety of staining, biochemical tests and the Bruker MALDI Biotyper®
  • Be responsible for oversight of equipment and temperature-controlled facilities in the Microbiology laboratory including writing and reviewing impact assessments.
  • Be responsible for the provision of media and consumables required for use in the Microbiology laboratory.
  • Develop excellent safety awareness with understanding of the requirements of a CL2 Microbiology Lab
  • Provide microbiological technical and practical support for drug projects and environmental monitoring of facilities and utilities.
  • Prepare reports and issue results associated with drug substance, drug product, excipients, environmental monitoring samples and water samples, according to agreed deadlines.
  • You may also be required to:
  • Develop and verify of methods, that are compliant with relevant Pharmacopoeia, to ensure the microbiological quality of new, non-sterile and sterile products.
  • Develop familiarity with regulatory support required for assigned product areas and authoring the microbiology content of regulatory submissions.
  • Support Digital Data and Analytics projects to improve the quality and re-usability of microbiology data by applying FAIR data principles and use of structured data.

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • BSc (or equivalent) with a background in pharmaceutical microbiology and experience of working to GLP or GMP
  • Experience in microbial identification using a variety of staining, biochemical tests, and speciation systems.
  • Agile worker, able to manage multiple projects and react to changes in priorities and workload.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to identify and evaluate multiple solutions to technical challenges.
  • Comfortable with learning and working with new technologies and digital/electronic data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication - confident to work with external contract testing organisations and internal project teams. Present effectively at internal meetings.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:
  • Experience in use of the Bruker MALDI Biotyper® is advantageous.
  • Previous experience of Laboratory management would be advantageous.
  • Safety awareness with experience of working in or an understanding of the requirements of a Containment Level 2 (CL2) Microbiology Lab.
