Our opportunity

Materials Engineer

The prime purpose of this role is to participate in the design, development and support of material engineering within the Future Capabilities Portfolio part of the Hardware Engineering (HwE) department.

Materials Design and Development work embraces all aspects of the product engineering lifecycle. Design tasks are to be carried out under Company Procedures in accordance with the Thales Reference System (Chorus) unless the Work Package Manager details alternative procedures.

The tasks are to be managed against agreed programmes with the emphasis on quality, time and financial targets.

Strategic and Financial Impact
  • In common with other FCAP roles the strategic value of the work being bid and delivered significantly outweighs the monetary value. This role is critical to securing the future of UWS as an outboard manufacturer/service provider and has significant implications on outboard array design and the future credibility of the company to deliver as a credible UW Battlespace firm.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

You will be accountable to the Materials Manager. The responsibilities typically include the following:
  • The candidate is expected to manage their own day-to-day activities and report to the Team on a weekly/bi-weekly basis.
  • Activities are required to be planned and completed in accordance with the varying programme requirements (Work package programme requirements, Bid timescales, Monthly reporting cycle, etc.).
  • Logical planning skills are required and the ability to see the full picture to plan around difficulties.
  • The candidate will be expected to demonstrate both autonomy and team working where appropriate.
  • A logical approach to problem solving is required.
  • The candidate will be involved in a wide range of varied and challenging activities across the organisation including, materials research, materials selection, design verification and validation, developing and testing processes and products.
  • As well as the production of trials plans for some activities, carrying out the plan to schedule and cost, and producing technical reports.

Skills and Expertise

  • Degree in a relevant subject e.g. Materials Science, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Physics etc.
  • Good knowledge of Materials Engineering environment preferably in defence or aerospace
  • Materials research, materials selection, design verification and validation, plus developing and testing processes and products.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in multi-functional teams with global development groups at other sites/facilities, as well as take work direction and follow procedures
  • Good written and oral communication, plus reporting skills to allow effective communication with peers, and both technical and non-technical customers
  • Sharp intellect with a challenging approach and a "can do attitude" combined with being organised and methodical, logical planning skills
  • Ability to work with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
  • Seeking Chartered Engineer or Scientist registration
