Senior Director, Head of Materials Science, MSAT

The Global Supply Chain Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) organization is a network-focused function which provides strategic direction and technical and operational support to ensure that GSK Global Supply Chain network, site goals and objectives are achieved, with determined strategy executed.

MSAT is the keeper of the body of manufacturing process knowledge, creates the instruction set and ensures manufacturing operations stay aligned with the registered process, with the primary objective being to ensure manufacturing processes are in control, compliant, performant & cost-efficient and remain state of the art.

MSAT's primary functions are to lead technology transfers, implement control strategies, provide technical process support across the product lifecycle, industrialising new products and new modalities into commercial manufacture and driving any product-related programs within the GSK PCS perimeter.

Position Overview

This role is responsible for directly leading the GSC materials science leaders and characterization capability globally across UK and Jurong. T his position leads an overall team of ~25-30 through 6-8 direct reports with major responsibilities around materials science characterization and strategies for comparability assessments purposes around material, process, and site change, to monitor products on stability and for RCA investigations including small and large molecule assets. This role is responsible for the leadership and delivery of prioritized business-critical Analytical & Materials Science projects involving complex characterization including imaging, particle characterization and spectroscopy, mass spec across GSC and External Supply for small and large molecule assets, across dosage forms and vaccines This role is key to people development of scientists across global sites, to ensure value-adding characterisation throughout the product lifecycle and act as a GSC lead in this space.

In this role you will
  • To set the strategy for GSC materials science in UK and Jurong and analytical characterization lab in Worthing and deliver against it by Directly leading Leaders of Leaders and Materials Science SMEs
  • To provide direct people and technical and analytical leadership of SMEs in GSC network for technically complex business-critical projects, for ongoing commercial supply and new product introduction
  • Define Material science leads as a project transition to PPQ and define materials science gaps and 2nd gen development needs.
  • To maintain, build, and adapt in-house materials science characterization capability and oversee the MRA-Materials risk assessment process to meet business needs; focused on biophysical and imaging characterization, mass spec and functional binding assays.
  • To partner with R&D teams and GSC characterization hubs to ensure appropriate characterization is in place and in use throughout the product lifecycle
  • To drive improvements in terms of characterization strategies, data generation and data usage/interpretation, both from a scientific advancement perspective and a waste reduction perspective
  • Effectively directly manage team, work programs and priorities across Ware, Jurong and Worthing Characterization hubs.
  • Develop key networks and seek out new market intelligence to deliver business benefit around materials science and characterization needs for both small and large molecule assets
  • Leading cross-functional, cross-site teams for product characterization/investigations and other tasks related to product quality and impacts to product release.
  • Authoring, reviewing and/or approving experimental protocols/reports and regulatory submissions.

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • BSc, MSc, or PhD in a related scientific discipline BS in a scientific discipline (materials science, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or related technical discipline)
  • Leading SMEs and Managers in small molecule characterisation, across dosage forms, for established products and new product introduction
  • Leading across cultures in a global environment
  • The job requires a high level of technical knowledge with the role holder expected to be lead SMEs in Materials Science and complex characterisation including particle characterisation, imaging, mass spec and binding assays for large molecules.
  • Deep domain knowledge of materials science and materials risk assessment process (MRAS)
  • Managing and Developing Directors, Manager and Senior Manager level SMEs
  • End-to end assessment, selection, purchase, set-up, and ownership of lab equipment for complex characterisation to provide business benefits.
  • Highly skilled in lab equipment management/oversight, computer systems, data handling and interpretation (including big data); all whilst meeting QMS, Data Integrity and safety requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in the pharmaceutical industry in leading the technical aspects of Product Lifecycle Management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Quality by Design and risk management approaches
  • Strong technical acumen and communication skills with the ability to articulate complex, technical details to stakeholders and enable cross functional collaboration across sites, supply chain, R&D and CMO/CRO

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • PhD level qualification in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy with extensive experience
