Head of Construction and Project Services

Location: GSK House, UK & Open to other EU locations.

The Head of Construction & Project Services is accountable for the safe and compliant construction of GSK's billion-pound capital portfolio, through the definition, implementation and direction of a construction methodology that is made available throughout the company and is able to meet the requirements in each of the countries and territories in which we work.

They are also accountable for the maintenance and continuous improvement of the capital projects methodology (the 'Project Management Framework' or PMF), and the provision of such across all GSC, R&D and WREF projects.

The role holder will be the functional leader of all Construction Technical Authorities (CTAs) and Construction Managers based on GSK sites.

They will discharge the legal accountability GSK holds to provide an effective construction and project management system of work that ensures the safety of those engaged in projects under our direction. In doing so, they will mitigate GSK's biggest 'business as usual' serious and fatal injury risk, namely construction and secure GSK's +£1b investment portfolio.

The Head of Construction & Project Services will be a member of the Engineering Leadership team and will collaborate with the Manufacturing Group Heads of Engineering on the construction of capital projects of all sizes across the supply network.

The job holder will also provide and maintain a CoE for CTAs and construction methods and execution that delivers the company's ambitions on safety and also manage and chair the cross-company Review Board that steers the Project Management Framework (PMF).

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the development, communication, training, coaching and maintenance of the PMF and construction practices ('Construction Handbook'), procedures and ways of working used for the effective management, benchmarking, control and reporting of project & construction execution, status and safety performance.
  • Functional leadership of all staff engaged in construction projects on GCP directed or influenced projects, but especially all CTAs deployed on projects and on GSK Sites.
  • Expert support and guidance to project construction staff throughout the GSK community of Engineering and the key advocate in improving our ways of working, safety standards, construction quality and guidance.
  • Provision of tools, ways of working and methodologies for the management of construction and demolition projects.
  • Thought leader in the introduction of different ways of working in the PM and construction space.
  • Leadership of staff engagement in construction projects and coach for the extended network of staff similarly engaged across GSK including oversight and final selection of all staff and contractors engaged by GCP projects.
  • SME and owner of the Global Engineering Standard for Construction and Demolition
  • Expert in the exploitation and improvement of our systems, such as visible reporting, Safety Observations and Construction Quality and benchmarking.
  • Maintain and engage with leading PM and Construction Management providers globally to ensure we build on best practice and have access to effective partners.
  • Leadership of the Construction Technical Authority network, community of practice and training tools for the development of capability in PM & Construction Management and safety in all regions and sites.
  • Support to all Principal Duty Holders (eg Site Directors) holding construction duty to support the fulfillment of their duty
  • Development of the capability, processes, tools and suppliers able to ensure that we deliver all (not just major) capital projects in a safe way in line with our EHS targets.
  • As a member of the Engineering and EHS, advocacy of the value of engineering and support to the continuing health of engineering as a function with GSK.

Why you? Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • Degree in Engineering
  • Extensive direct contracting experience, managing trade contractors on construction sites
  • Highly experienced in the delivery of high-tech life science projects in multiple geographies
  • Broad experience spent in the capital project execution.
  • Experience of different geographies, cultures and working practice
  • Operational engineering experience through time spent managing engineering on a live manufacturing site
  • Leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Professional engineering certification, such as C.Eng, PE or Eur.Ing
  • Construction and/or Project Management in Lifesciences
