2 Year Fixed Term Position

At GSK we see a world in which advanced applications of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) will allow us to develop transformational medicines when combined with the power of genetics and functional genomics. AI will also play a role in how we diagnose and use medicines to enable everyone to do more, feel better and live longer. It is an ambitious vision that will require the development of products at the cutting edge of ML.

The opportunities for ML extend to many other areas of our business, including medicine safety, manufacturing and supply chain. To realize these opportunities, GSK has created a global Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning group (AI/ML), with locations in London, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia and Heidelberg, to focus on the development and application of ML to problems of critical importance at GSK. This includes the Responsible AI team, which leads multidisciplinary research and practice in policy and ML for responsible implementation of AI.

By actively engaging with the ML community and publishing our research, the AI/ML group operates at the cutting-edge of ML research. To help us, we are seeking a passionate, early-career researcher who wishes to turn their talents to AI ethics and policy in the healthcare sector. You will be working alongside a Senior Policy Manager on building research projects to address socio-ethical concerns arising from the use of AIML in biopharma and healthcare. This fellowship is a two-year position with optional extension.

You will have access to outstanding experts in biology, chemistry, (software) engineering, data science, ML, ethics, and policy. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with our academic partners in AIML ethics at Stanford and the University of Adelaide. You will foster links between industry and academia, publish your work and present at conferences. Your knowledge and curiosity will be stretched, and you will have the potential to impact the lives of people threatened by or living with diseases of the developed and developing world.

This is one of two fellowship positions currently available in the Responsible AI team. The team takes a multidisciplinary approach to addressing challenges for the responsible use of AIML. If you are interested in pursuing academic research into responsible AI with a focus on ML research, please search for 394563 GSK.ai Fellow, Responsible AI (ML Research) on the career's website.

In this role you will
  • Carry out high-quality, novel and publishable research in AI ethics and policy with the aim of addressing a relevant and timely issue in the application of AIML in biopharma
  • Lead the planning and direction of your research and prioritise goals
  • Connect and collaborate with subject matter experts in AIML, policy, and law to ensure the applicability of your research
  • Communicate policy/ethics concepts to staff and partners at all levels up to senior leader/stakeholder and across all relevant disciplines
  • Establish and nurture relationships with world-class institutions
  • Represent GSK externally to advance technical capability across the industry by publishing in high-impact journals and presenting at prestigious conferences
