Electronic Hardware Engineer

Cheadle (SK3 0XB) - Hybrid

Thales Underwater Systems cover a broad portfolio of engineering challenges, working at the forefront of the exciting area of remotely operated unmanned vehicles for maritime/naval operations, the introduction into service of new sonar capabilities to surface and submarine platforms in the UK and around the world, and the support for all Thales in-service sonar systems.

We are recruiting for an Electronic Hardware Engineer to be instrumental in the Design, Integration and Qualification of products for complex system development.

Primary Purpose of the Role:

To carry out electrical and electronic hardware engineering activities as required by the business. Undertake electrical and electronic engineering tasks associated with the specification, design, prototyping, development, test and integration of interconnected Hardware products.

Typical products will include high speed processing, storage, networking, security, data comms, LV power supply, switching and distribution. These integrated Hardware products must be suitably certified in accordance with EU and UK regulations for installation into the environments expected to be found inside submarines / surface ships. The role may involve some technical leadership and functional support responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

The role includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following activities:
  • Hardware design, development and test activities, ensuring requirements are met
  • Implement the hardware architecture in physical and electrical form, fit and function.
  • Support Manufacturing and Procurement during the build phase, i.e. respond to Problem Reports and implement Engineering Change Requests.
  • Define the Design Proving / Hardware Test Specifications and use these during qualification.
  • Define the EMC and Environmental Test Specifications and use these during qualification.
  • Design and develop any special test equipment to facilitate the above.
  • Attend / manage qualification testing off-site where required (EMC and Environmental).
  • Demonstrate compliance to the requirements set using IADT techniques including the provision of V&V evidence for capturing in the Thales Requirements Management tools (e.g. DOORS), the production of Test Reports and Certificates.
  • Acts as a HW engineering source of knowledge for key HW engineering "cross-cutting" specialisms including, but not necessarily limited to, CE/UK CA marking, LV Directive, EMC and environmental certification, RoHS and REACH.

Skills and experience required

Strong General Electronic and/or Electrical Engineering experience within a regulated environment.
  • Bespoke Digital & Analogue circuit design, development, simulation, debug and test.
  • Power electronics circuits, i.e. voltage greater than 60V.
  • Signal transmission and processing design, matched impedance, signal termnation, LVDS, serial communications signal integrity.
  • Production of PCB layout specifications.
  • Circuit level serial interfaces I2C, SPI, I2S.
  • Interfacing between LVPECL, VML, CML, and LVDS, M-LVDS Logic I/O Level and voltage translations.
  • Common Inter-IC Digital Interfaces for Audio Data Transfer.
  • Embedded Microcontroller design.
  • EMC and environmental standards / requirements.
  • Engineering Development lifecycles, including technical reviews and gate reviews.
