Rail Safety and Standards Board

The Rail Safety and Standards Board is an independent body, working with members to drive improvements in the GB rail system. Through research, standards, analysis and insight, RSSB drives improvements in health and wellbeing, and in delivering a safer, more efficient and sustainable rail system.

Working at RSSB offers an exciting opportunity to significantly impact the rail industry in numerous ways. Our effectiveness is dependent on collaboration across a wide range of specialities.

What we do

RSSB has been supporting Britain’s rail sector for over 20 years.

We make sure that industry knowledge gaps are addressed, and we work collaboratively with an evolving industry to ensure that innovative and sustainable technology is operated safely, efficiently and cost-effectively. We codify and share best practice, both in Britain and abroad.

We are proudly impartial, and home to some of rail’s leading experts on technical matters. Guided by facts and analysis, we help to bridge knowledge gaps, optimise use of the latest technology and disseminate and systemise industry best practice.

Diversity

We recognise the value of a diverse workforce in achieving our vision, and acknowledge that we are likely to perform our best when we feel understood, valued and respected. We are committed to respecting diversity, providing equal opportunities in employment and ultimately creating a workplace which is inclusive to everyone that works for and with us.

Equal opportunities and dignity at work

For diversity to thrive within the organisation, our working environment must provide for equality of opportunity. We set a high bar on treating colleagues with dignity and respect. Our policy lays out the basis for this approach.

Equal opportunities

RSSB will avoid unlawful discrimination in all aspects of employment. This includes recruitment, promotion, opportunities for training, pay and benefits, discipline and selection for redundancy. Every employee is required to assist RSSB to meet its commitment to provide equal opportunities in employment and avoid unlawful discrimination.

Acts of discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation against employees or customers are disciplinary offences. These will be dealt with under RSSB’s disciplinary procedure. Discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation may constitute gross misconduct and could lead to dismissal without notice.

Working practices

RSSB recognises that a healthy work life balance is important to all our employees. Our unique role in the rail industry is conducive to diverse working practices. We are proud that about 20% of our workforce have an agreed flexible working arrangement, with further informal arrangements agreed at a local level.

Remuneration

Our remuneration framework is gender neutral. All our roles are evaluated to eliminate gender bias. As a result, we are confident that both our male and female employees are paid at a similar level.

Development

We encourage continuous professional development for all our employees. Our planned activities include strengthening our partnership with Women In Rail (WR). Our employees continue to participate in the WR mentoring programme both as mentors and mentees. This year we are also supporting WR's Pro-Bono Fund, which is aimed at new entrants or returners to the rail industry. We are pleased to be hosting a number of WR events, including the launch of the mentoring scheme, at our central London offices.

Diversity and inclusion

RSSB has two groups, the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group and Women at RSSB. Looking at the broader diversity context, these groups comprise a cross-section of our employees. By creating a space for these groups, we aim to champion diversity initiatives, building a more diverse and inclusive culture at RSSB.

Recruitment

We actively reach out to a diverse pool of talent to raise awareness of opportunities at RSSB. Our aspiration is to leverage RSSB's unique position in the rail industry to promote diversity, particularly in technical and engineering roles.
