Category: Home & Flexible Working, Generation (Age Friendly)
For Bridget Eickhoff, flexible working at RSSB has been a transformative experience, allowing her to gradually transition towards retirement while contributing valuable expertise to the industry.
With the ability to reduce her working hours incrementally, Bridget continues to find satisfaction in her work and provides crucial support to her colleagues. In this interview, she discusses how flexible working has benefited her personally and professionally, enabling her to maintain a fulfilling career while exploring new ways to support her team.
What has flexible working at RSSB meant for you?
The ability to reduce my working hours step by step rather than having to go straight from working full-time to retirement. I am able to continue delivering work that I hope is useful to the industry and which I find satisfying.
What benefits do you think there are to others and RSSB?
My colleagues at RSSB can take the lead on new projects while being able to seek my advice in relevant areas. This means that the organisation, and the wider industry, has access to the depth of experience which I have accumulated over many years and enables me to transfer some of that knowledge to others.
How are you taking advantage of the smart working policy?
Working reduced hours, in the middle of the working week, gives me the freedom to do other things in concentrated blocks.
What has it enabled you to do differently?
I am learning to act as support to my colleagues whilst they generally lead on new projects. This is beneficial for all of us as we get to see different ways of approaching challenges. Variety and diversity of approaches is good for the company and the industry, as well as the team.
How has smart working changed the culture at RSSB?
I can’t comment on the company as a whole as I don’t have enough experience but, in my area, people are more comfortable making their own decisions about working from the office, from home or out with members. It does not affect me directly, but the ability to balance childcare responsibilities, especially when young children are unwell, is also beneficial.
