Gerald Riley Celebrates his 60-year Career as a RSSB Principal Rail Operations Specialists

As the nation commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway this weekend, we are proud to mark another extraordinary milestone — the 60-year career of one of our Principal Rail Operations Specialists, Gerald Riley.

Gerald began his railway journey on 27 September 1965 — exactly 140 years after George Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1 pulled the first steam-hauled, fare-paying passenger train along the Stockton & Darlington Railway. That historic moment transformed global trade, travel, and communication. 

Gerald’s own contribution to the industry has been significant, improving the efficiency and safety of passenger and freight operations across Britain’s rail network.

Starting as a Class 4 booking clerk at Normanton, Gerald’s passion for railways propelled him through roles in booking offices, goods departments, and management. His career highlights include the introduction of the TOPS system, which enabled British Rail to track rolling stock in real time, and his role in revising the railway rule book into its present modular form.

Gerald’s expertise and dedication have earned him widespread respect across the industry. In a fitting tribute, Freightliner Group Ltd named a locomotive in his honour — Gerald “The Rule Book” Riley — recognising his status as a go-to authority on operational rules and guidance.

Reflecting on his remarkable career, Gerald said:

“I still find you learn something new every day. When I started, none of the subjects we discuss today would even have been considered. Learning from others, and having records of decisions is vital.

“Technology and concerns have evolved, and so has the industry. It’s been a privilege to witness and contribute to this transformation.”

RSSB CEO Mark Phillips added:

“Gerald’s career has helped shape Britain’s railways. His dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to operational excellence make an indelible mark on the industry.

“This weekend, as we celebrate the birth of the modern railway era, we also honour remarkable individuals like Gerald who contribute to its development with passion and purpose."
