Senior Systems Integration and Test Engineer - Flight Avionics (FLX)

Location: Manor Royal, Crawley

Hybrid working (3-4 days at office)

About this role...

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary engineering environment, focusing on the development and delivery of products and programmes to a variety of customers within the Aerospace sector, covering both civilian and military domains, including:

  • The development of our next generation SATCOM terminal for the civil airline market,
  • Supporting the delivery of our innovative Air-to-Ground connectivity solution, providing superior internet access for airline passengers,
  • The development of our next generation Tactical Mission Management System (TMMS) or Secure Information System for military helicopter platforms,

You will join our Flight Avionics (FLX) Connectivity Competency Centre (CCC), working within the Systems IVVQ (Integration, Verification, Validation and Qualification) discipline, accountable for the delivery of IVVQ capability and expertise across the FLX business in the UK.

Initially you will likely be supporting integration and test activities across the next phase of our innovative Air-to-Ground connectivity solution, providing superior internet access for airline passengers and aircraft operations utilising a high-speed 4G/LTE network for reliable and cost-effective communications between the aircraft and the ground.

Key responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the daily upkeep of our lab-based integration and test environment, working in collaboration with the lab manager and other members of the test engineering team. This will include preparing and capturing the configuration of test benches, making modifications to the test environment as necessary, ensuring all applicable Health & Safety aspects are observed and managed, and facilitating aspects such as test equipment hire and calibration.
  • Supporting the IVVQ Manager, and as their delegate where required, in defining the scope of work, providing detailed estimates and preparing operational plans to deliver against this scope.
  • Definition and execution of integration procedures and other related documentation.
  • Definition of test objectives and procedures, traceable through the requirements data model and ensuring sufficient coverage against design requirements.
  • Execution of test procedures in accordance with the approved test plan and schedule, including the subsequent analysis of results and management of defects through to resolution.
  • Generation of system test reports including the formal recording of any applicable deviations.
  • Consolidation of verification evidence and the generation of Verification Cross Reference Matrices (VCRMs) to underwrite system conformance, certification and customer acceptance.
  • Supporting, and leading where required, engineering governance reviews associated with the IVVQ phase of the System Development Lifecycle (SDL).
  • Preparation and regular maintaining of metrics to ensure strong KPI reporting to internal and external stakeholders, and to aid in decision making.
  • Supporting customer visits and meetings, including the delivery of any product demonstrations.

About You:
  • An engineering professional, with a strong understanding of the Systems Development Lifecycle and previous experience working within a delivery-focused integration and test environment.
  • A good understanding of RF (Radio Frequency) principles and their application within engineering.
  • An excellent track record of delivering personal commitments to cost and schedule, with outputs meeting the satisfaction of the customer.
  • A team player with a 'can-do' attitude who performs effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, promoting the values of inclusiveness and diversity.
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbally and written, with the ability to present and explain technical and complex problems, tailored appropriately for the audience.
  • An ability to work with combinations of technologies and to integrate and verify them in a logical and structured way into a system in order to fully satisfy a customer's requirements.
  • Understands the importance of following and continuously developing engineering process, and tracking progress through the use of appropriate engineering metrics.
  • Experience of interfacing with third party organisations (customers, suppliers, external bodies)

Desirable (but not essential)...
  • Minimum of a Bachelor Degree (BEng, BSc) in a numerate, scientific or engineering subject or higher education/equivalent training and experience.
  • An understanding of the Aerospace domain and Avionics systems, specifically communications systems and how they interrelate/interconnect.
  • Experience of tools including IBM Rational DOORS and JIRA.
  • A basic understanding of Avionics certification, e.g. STC, TSO, CAA, EASA, FAA etc.
