Mechanical Environmental & Compliance Consultant

  • You will operate as a Mechanical Environmental Subject Matter Expert across a wide array of Thales programmes, providing key strategic guidance and expertise (including airworthiness compliance) to support delivery across existing programmes and new product development for ISR

About the team

You will be working within the ISR Hardware Team who provide diverse skills, knowledge, expertise and experience in the mechanical design of equipment for multiple platform environments from submarines to aircraft. This role will require you to operate within multi-functional project/product teams over a complete programme life cycle from Bid Phase to In-service Support. The mechanical design of complex, high performance sub-systems in short timescales requires the use of advanced engineering simulation toolsets.

Our Opportunity

You will need to ensure positive contribution to the achievement of project/product requirements; by influencing the mechanical environmental design of Military and Commercial electronic equipment to meet the operating requirements of airborne, seaborne, submarine and land-based host platforms. Perform in the role as a Subject Matter Expert for mechanical environmental compliance.

Key Responsibilities will include:
  • Providing key strategic guidance to product development activities defining the Mechanical Environment for the product and how to apply the relevant Mechanical Environmental standards to a product.
  • Generate Mechanical Environmental Control, Test plans & Reports including Technical justifications and analysis of Mechanical Environmental results.
  • Lead / Assist in the Lab with measurements when necessary.
  • Lead and coordinate Mechanical Environmental test readiness activities for projects to ensure successful transition into test.
  • Review of sub-contractors Mechanical Environmental test reports
  • Support the theoretical assessment of the design and its associated requirements to ensure that equipment mechanical environmental performance requirements are met, including structural, dynamic and thermal performance.
  • Peer reviewing of designs and documentation.
  • Estimation of tasks and generation of plans including reporting on progress
  • Comply with local and company processes and procedures (supported by the Thales Engineering team).
  • Support the hardware engineering discipline Leadership Team

10% travel required to customer sites and relevant test houses within the UK.

About You

You will have...
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Mechanical Engineering
  • Degree in mechanical/aeronautical engineering, alternatively HNC/HND with experience and a proven track record.
  • Experience of Airworthiness (MAA)
  • Relevant design experience in a similar field with a good understanding of computational techniques.
  • Experience in deriving mechanical environmental requirements for land, sea and air platforms.
  • Experience in designing for Mechanical Environment
  • Good knowledge of materials and finishes for harsh environments.
  • Experience in supporting/overseeing qualification testing.
  • Experience in developing qualification test plans and schedules.
  • Generation of technical reports
  • This role will require full SC clearance without any restrictions/caveats, either current or ability to gain full clearance is essential. For more information and guidance please visit the UKSV website.

Desirable:
  • Certification in Airworthiness (SME Environmental)
  • Good working knowledge of MOD/Military procedures and specifications.
  • Experience in the design of equipment for military environments e.g. racks, cardframes, electronic modules, and surveillance sensors.
  • Familiar working with relevant Defence/Military standards.
