About the Opportunity

Are you a talented and ambitious individual looking to further your career in Nuclear Fuel Performance Engineering?

Jacobs are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Fuel Performance Specialist to support the development of our ANSWERS software and run fuel performance models, analyse the output data and present relevant outcomes and results in technical reports for our customers.

The nuclear industry is moving away from traditional reactor designs towards new small modular reactor (SMR) and advanced modular reactor (AMR) designs, with improved safety features and lower build costs. These new concepts bring exciting new modelling challenges requiring the introduction of innovative new mathematics, physics, engineering and software engineering techniques.

Fuel performance modelling is a key activity in a future UK nuclear fuel cycle and therefore it feeds into and influences the wider shaping of UK energy policy and strategy for moving towards a low carbon future.

This role will present excellent opportunities for the continual development of skills and experience in physics, particularly as applied to nuclear engineering; also, the potential to lead technical developments and collaborations, and the teams responsible for their implementation.

This role will be based at our Dorchester office with the opportunity to travel to client sites, as required. Some home / remote working is also available, and consideration will also be given in respect to part time & flexible working hours. Key responsibilities:
  • Developing underpinning mathematical and physical theories for Fuel Performance modelling
  • Provide specialist technical support to our customer projects ensuring the delivery of high-quality outputs
  • Perform complex Fuel performance assessments as part of a broader reactor physics plant analysis
  • Delivering technical training courses to a specialist audience
  • Working as a team to develop and refine theoretical models and computational simulations
  • Presenting results at technical meetings and conferences (where appropriate)
  • Interfacing closely with the international academic research community
  • Generating new business through interaction with international commercial customers

Here's What You'll Need:

  • An undergraduate degree in mathematics, physics or engineering, or any other subject with a strong mathematical component
  • A strong background in mathematical and physical theory and implementation
  • Programming skills in languages such as Fortran, Python or Java
  • Ability to think innovatively and to solve complex problems
  • Able to quickly and efficiently absorb new technical skills
  • Self-motivated, with a genuine passion for the field of nuclear physics
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
