Hachette UK

Our Mission

Helping readers discover new worlds of ideas, learning, entertainment and opportunity is the driving force behind everything we do. We are one of the largest publishing groups in the UK, with 12 publishing divisions and over 60 imprints. Everyone here is proud to be in the business of opening doors and minds.

Our Employee Networks

Our 10 employee networks are people-led, voluntary and open to everyone who works here. Together, their mission is to foster communities of inclusion and belonging through the creation of safe spaces for our people to share their realities, raise awareness and explore topics that matter to them.

Our networks work closely with our leadership and HR team, and their work is at the heart of our diversity and inclusion programme, Changing the Story. We welcome and encourage everyone who works here – as champions and allies – to join, participate and get involved with the networks to help create a vibrant and supportive culture for everyone.

Our People

The talented people who power our business are behind some of the world’s most memorable works. We feel passionate that this hard work should be recognised, and so we offer a fantastic range of benefits and rewards to help everyone feel appreciated.

Our Reward Package

Our reward package has four guiding principles: transparent, consistent, comprehensive and attractive.

We offer up to 70 per cent off our books, and our Hachette Rewards programme has hundreds of deals that can help you save on big and small purchases, including discounts for cinemas, restaurants, gyms and more!

In line with our underlying principle of rewarding financial performance, we operate an annual company-wide, discretionary staff bonus scheme - depending on the financial results of the company overall and the financial results of each division. We have a generous pension scheme, private medical insurance and life assurance for most of our permanent roles.  We also offer a generous holiday entitlement starting at 28 days which increases throughout your time here, and you can also buy up to a week’s worth of extra days for those years when you have special plans. In addition, you can take two additional paid Community Days each year to support outreach activities close to your heart, and we also offer summer hours for the majority of our roles where we finish at 1pm on Fridays during the summer month.

Our Development Opportunities

We’re striving, alongside the rest of our industry, to help everyone who works with us to feel appreciated and to be fairly compensated for helping us shape our story.

That’s why we have so many incredible opportunities for our people to keep learning at every stage of their careers. From proofreading to pitching, and negotiating deals to digital marketing, we offer workshops, author talks and expert insights alongside leadership programmes.

We believe in the powerful impact of mentoring and offer a range of programmes to choose from, including the opportunity to receive guidance from board members and other key people within the company. It’s a powerful way to take charge when it comes to shaping your own story and career development with us.

More about Hachette UK

WHAT WE DO...

Improving Representation

  • We have been voluntarily publishing our ethnicity pay gap since 2019, a move which saw us Shortlisted and Highly Commended that same year in the Inclusive Workplace category at the Global Equality & Diversity (GED) Awards.
  • At the time, we pledged a representation target of 15% of the total group workforce for Black, Asian, Mixed Heritage and Minority Ethnic talent within five years. And in that time, we’ve made significant progress. So much so that in 2021 we received the Inclusivity in Publishing Award from the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards.
  • Since our first Gender Pay Gap Report, our Board composition has changed dramatically, from one-third women to two-thirds women and, as of April 2022, the split stands as 10 women to 6 men.
  • In 2017, we also pledged that our population of women (66% at the time) across the company would be reflected in the top pay quartile by 2020. This is a target that we are now very close to achieving at 64%, and this progress – along with other initiatives – has meant that we’ve been included in The Times’ Top 50 Employers for Women listing for the last three years (2020, 2021 and 2022).

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION...

Changing the Story

  • Our ambition is for our team, our publishing, and our authors to be fully reflective of the society we live in. We actively seek different voices, perspectives, and ideas. A commitment which sits at the heart of our diversity and inclusion programme, Changing the Story; one of the four pillars of our business strategy.
  • Changing the Story started in 2016 and has since evolved into the driving force behind everything we do, as we remain committed to not only achieving, but surpassing, our original goals. We recognise that we’re at the relative start of our journey, but we’re committed to Changing the Story – which consists of our strategic policies and programmes, cultural initiatives, and progressive partnerships – and to delivering real and lasting change, both across our business and the wider industry.
  • As part of our commitment to furthering the geographical and socio-economic makeup of the publishing industry, we recently partnered with Northumbria University and New Writing North – an organisation aimed at empowering creative writing and reading in the North of England - to design a new one-year MA in Publishing.
  • As part of this commitment, we’re providing a £2,000 scholarship to one highly gifted student from an underrepresented background each year. While students from across the programme can take part in a work placement scheme, either with us or with New Writing North, so that they can apply their knowledge to the real world.
