International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
The Gender Balance Network (with the assistance of the Wellbeing Network) conducted a colourful takeover on 24th November 2022 to raise awareness for the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The UNiTE campaign has proclaimed the 25th of each month as “Orange Day”, a day to raise awareness and take action to end violence against women and girls. As a bright and optimistic colour, orange represents a future free from violence against women and girls. Notwithstanding growing efforts and recent achievements, violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains the most widespread and pervasive human rights violation worldwide affecting more than an estimated 1 in 3 women, a figure that has remained largely unchanged over the last decade. The most recent global estimates showed that, on average, a woman or girl is killed by someone in her own family every 11 minutes. The campaign is ongoing and the GBN encouraged all colleagues to do what they can to support the end of violence against women whether that’s donating to your chosen charity, joining a women’s rights movement or incorporating a little orange into your outfits.

Changing the Story Walk
On 14th June, the Gender Balance Network led Changing the Story colleagues in support of refugees, by embarking on 5 mile charity walks around the UK to raise money for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Over the past two years over 80 million people have been forcibly displaced as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order. These events are disproportionately negatively affect female, BAME and LGBTQI+ refugees. While the walk was nothing in comparison to the suffering refugees endure it was hoped that the walk would allow us to come together to show our support of those in need. So, Hachette UK employees, on one of the hottest days of the year, walked their way to raising £5,000 for UNHCR, surpassing all expectations.
