Power Electronics Engineer
Cheadle - Hybrid


Thales Underwater Systems cover a broad portfolio of engineering challenges, working at the forefront of the exciting area of remotely operated unmanned vehicles for maritime/naval operations, the introduction into service of new sonar capabilities to surface and submarine platforms in the UK and around the world, and the support for all Thales in-service sonar systems.

We are now recruiting for a Senior capability Engineer who can lead the design and development of Power Electronics to operate within harsh environments. This includes a strong understanding of both developing bespoke products and the integration of COTS products into large, safety critical systems.

Primary Purpose of the Role:

Responsible for the design and development of digital / analogue (mixed signal) circuits and power electronics. Work in collaboration with the Hardware Architects, Systems Engineers and business development teams to develop innovative, cost effective and compliant solutions to the customer needs.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

The role may include, but not be limited to the following activities:
  • Focal point for the development of the Analogue Design, Simulation and Testing core capability within Underwater Systems
  • Support the Analogue Discipline Lead in the development of the less experienced engineers in the areas of Engineering Design, use of Engineering Tools and Thales Design Processes.
  • Enhance the team's knowledge in Design for Manufacture and Product Line Engineering.
  • Support the Hardware Bid and Product Manager to implement Process Improvement and Product initiatives within the team.
  • To carry out design activities in a team environment with other engineers and partners/collaborators.
  • Work collaboratively with production and procurement to produce cost effective, easy to manufacture design solutions.
  • Provide support to the preparation of detailed estimates and bids.
  • Provide support to the following as required:
    • Production team
    • Systems Integration team
    • Off-site suppliers or customers.

Skills, experience and knowledge required
  • Experience leading the design for mixed signal / power electronics products.
  • Highly skilled in Digital/Analogue (mixed signal) and LV Power Supply Engineering (bespoke and COTS).
  • Good Knowledge of PCB layout techniques pertaining to the above.
  • Good understanding of Engineering Design lifecycles and the interaction with System Engineering.
  • Knowledge of the application of engineering design standards to the development of mixed signal and power electronics products.
  • Awareness of the suitability of designing bespoke power supply products or the selection of COTS power supply products for operating in harsh environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of the application of EMC and LVD (both design techniques and appreciation of electronic module packaging/screening filtering etc) and environmental standards in COTS and bespoke design products.
  • Ability to use design and simulation tools such as AutoCAD, Simetrix, LTSpice, Cadence schematic Capture or similar

Desirable

Defence industry background and/or understanding of Naval platforms. The key areas of design undertaken for which previous experience would be beneficial will include: -
  • The design of sonar assemblies and equipment for the sub-sea environment.
  • The design of deployment systems.
  • Design and development of Hardware Engineering Products.
  • Design / specification of packaging solutions
