Detailed job description and main responsibilities The Consultant Day-Case General Surgeon will provide expert elective surgical care for patients with abdominal wall hernias, specialising in laparoscopic and open hernia repair. The role focuses on high-quality, efficient day-case surgery, ensuring excellent patient outcomes, rapid recovery, and adherence to enhanced recovery protocols.
• The post holder will contribute to the development of a high-volume, low-complication hernia service and support multidisciplinary collaboration within the surgical team.
• To provide a service for patients who present as an emergency to the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
• To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care, as prescribed in GMC Guidance 'Duties of a Doctor', at all times; and ensuring that bad practice is reported, as appropriate.
• To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
- To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients.
- To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
- Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
• Supervise and train junior medical staff
• To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
• Teaching, research and administration.
• To proactively develop the service.
• To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
Person specificationTraining & Qualifications Essential criteria - Full GMC Registration Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview date
- Full GMC Registration
- MB BS/MB ChB or Equivalent
- MRCS or Equivalent
- Current BLS Certification
Desirable criteria - Membership of relavent Specialist Associations
- Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent.
Experience / Clinical Skills Essential criteria - Fully trained in General Surgery
- Fully competent in Emergency General Surgery
- Fully competent in day case laparoscopic surgery, day case procedures, benign upper GI or coloproctology
- Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan.
- Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems.
- Demonstrates clear, logical thinking / analytical approach.
- Willingness to develop clinical skills and experience in area of interest.
Desirable criteria - Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest
- JAG accreditation in colonoscopy
- Undertaken a period of specialist training in a nationally recognised unit
Audit/ Quality Improvement Essential criteria - Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit
- Participation in a quality improvement programme
- Experience of quality improvement work and audit
Desirable criteria - Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence
- Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvemen
- Published Audit including quality improvement.
Research Essential criteria - Understanding and interest in research.
- Ability to appraise research critically
- Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects
- Evidence of recent research and development activity
Desirable criteria - Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peerreviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty. • Evidence of clinical or research commitment to relevant specialty interest.
Teaching Essential criteria - Experience of and a commitment to training/ teaching undergraduate and postgraduates.

Desirable criteria - Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching.
- Post Graduate qualification in teaching and training.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.
The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
