Executive Assistant

House of Lords - Black Rod's Office

BELONG HERE. TOGETHER, WE MAKE PARLIAMENT HAPPEN.

PLEASE NOTE: This role is only open to existing colleagues in the House of Lords Administration, House of Commons Administration and those from Joint Departments.

As an Executive Assistant you'll play an important role in supporting the UK's parliamentary democracy. Your work will help Members carry out their responsibilities effectively - contributing to something bigger than any one role.

You'll be part of a collaborative community, working alongside colleagues from a wide range of professions. Together, we make Parliament happen.

You'll be based on the Parliamentary Estate in Westminster - a unique working environment shaped by history and powered by the people who work here today.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you'll:
  • You will provide high-quality executive and administrative support to Black Rod and the Yeoman Usher, that helps enable the smooth running of parliamentary business.
  • Work closely with colleagues across Parliament, managing correspondence, coordinating meetings, preparing minutes and maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Support the delivery of key ceremonial, procedural and State events, helping ensure the House is prepared to carry out its constitutional and public responsibilities.
  • Act as a trusted point of contact for protocol, procedural and event-related enquiries, building effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to communications, media activity and business resilience planning, helping the House of Lords operate effectively today while preparing for future priorities and events.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who can bring their skills and experience to make a meaningful contribution here.

You'll have:
  • Proven executive assistant skills in an office environment, including minute-taking and excellent IT skills.
  • Experience of diary management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with high-level leadership / interlocutors and colleagues with tact, discretion and reliability.
  • A high level of organizational ability, analytical and problem-solving skills under time and concurrency pressure, and a flexible approach to their work pattern.
  • An interest and knowledge of the purpose and workings of Parliament.

It would be even better if you have (or are willing to learn):
  • Experience of dealing with high-profile external agencies or organisations (for example: Ministerial Offices; Senior Officials at the Royal Household; Chief Executives of high-profile public and private sector bodies; Westminster City Council etc.).
  • An understanding and experience of budgeting processes.
  • An understanding and experience of event management and visitor protocol matters.

For full details, please see the job description.

What you'll get in return

Working in the House of Lords means joining a community that values your wellbeing and contribution.

You'll benefit from:
  • 30 days annual leave (rising to 35 after one year)
  • Generous Civil Service pension scheme
  • A comprehensive Parliamentary health and wellbeing programme
  • Access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities across diverse professions
  • The chance to witness democracy in action and work in a place of historic national significance

The work we do is vital to the House of Lords - the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It plays a critical role in making laws, scrutinising government, and providing independent expertise on national issues.
