PLEASE NOTE: This role is only open to existing colleagues in the House of Lords Administration, House of Commons Administration and those from Joint Departments.

As an Accounts Clerk, you'll play an important role in supporting the UK's parliamentary democracy. Your work will help Members carry out their responsibilities effectively - contributing to something bigger than any one role.

You'll be part of a collaborative community, working alongside colleagues from a wide range of professions. Together, we make Parliament happen.

You'll be assisting the Assistant Accountant in providing good financial management and assisting with the debt management process. This will include being responsible for cashiering duties, reconciling takings and sales and preparing banking.

You'll be based on the Parliamentary Estate in Westminster - a unique working environment shaped by history and powered by the people who work here today.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you'll:
  • Support the accurate and timely processing of income, including receipting and banking, while maintaining appropriate financial records in line with established policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and balance cash floats for outlets on a daily basis, ensuring account reconciliations and journals are completed accurately and raising any concerns or risks to the Accountant when required.
  • Provide support with petty cash administration, including reimbursing colleagues for authorised expenditure in a timely and helpful manner.
  • Assist with the management of customer accounts, including processing and reconciling payments, issuing invoices and payment links, responding to telephone enquiries, and supporting debt management activities with a customer-focused approach.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of financial systems and processes, helping to improve the quality, accuracy, and accessibility of financial information and reporting.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who can bring their skills and experience to make a meaningful contribution here.

You'll have:
  • Finance knowledge and digital skills - Experience of working in a finance or administrative environment, with a good understanding of accounting processes and practices. You will be comfortable using a range of IT systems, including accounting software and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and be willing to continue developing your technical skills and knowledge.
  • Attention to detail and delivering results - A proactive and organised approach, with the ability to work accurately and manage competing priorities effectively. You will be supported to meet deadlines while maintaining a high standard of work and remaining calm and focused in a busy environment.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills - An ability to review and interpret financial information, identify issues, and contribute to finding practical solutions. You will be encouraged to use your initiative while working closely with colleagues and seeking guidance when needed to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Communication and relationship-building skills - Strong verbal, written, and digital communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly and confidently to colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and levels of financial knowledge. A collaborative and approachable manner, with a commitment to building positive working relationships across the organisation.

For full details, please see the attached EOI Document.

Working at the House of Lords means joining a community that values your wellbeing, growth and contribution.

You'll benefit from:
  • 30 days annual leave (rising to 35 after one year).
  • Generous Civil Service pension scheme.
  • A comprehensive Parliamentary health and wellbeing programme.
  • Access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities across diverse professions.
