Job description

About the team

Our Argos Commercial & Digital team shapes the products, ranges and experiences that help customers find what they need for their homes. Within Home, Utilities and Bathroom is our biggest category, bringing together everyday essentials, recognisable market-leading brands and a fast-moving promotional agenda. It is a visible part of the business where strong commercial judgement, customer insight and supplier partnerships can make a meaningful difference to growth.

More about the role

As Senior Buyer, you will lead the Utilities and Bathroom category, with responsibility for key areas including laundry and airers and partnerships with brands such as Minky and Brabantia. You will shape the category and range strategy, translating customer, market and commercial insight into plans that deliver profitable sales, margin and market share growth across our digital and store channels.

This is a high-profile, promotionally driven role. You will oversee range architecture, product selection, pricing and launch planning; lead strategic supplier relationships and commercial negotiations; and work closely with Merchandising, Digital, Marketing, Finance, Product Development, Technical and Global Sourcing. You will use trading performance, customer trends and competitor activity to adjust plans at pace, while coaching and developing Buyers and Assistant Buyers to deliver against clear commercial objectives.

More about you

You will bring strong non-food Buying experience from an omnichannel retail environment, with evidence of owning category or range decisions and delivering against commercial targets. You can move confidently between long-term category strategy and immediate trading priorities, using complex data to make clear decisions on range, price, promotion, stock and supplier investment.

You are an effective commercial negotiator and relationship builder who can influence major suppliers and senior stakeholders. You will also have experience leading and developing a Buying team, creating clear accountability and helping others perform at their best. Knowledge of legal and ethical requirements relevant to retail Buying, including competition law, anti-bribery and intellectual property, will support your judgement in the role.

Essential criteria
  • Buying experience in a non-food omnichannel retail environment, with accountability for category or range decisions
  • Evidence of delivering commercial performance against sales and margin targets through category, pricing, range or promotional actions
  • Experience of leading commercial negotiations and developing supplier plans or joint business plans with major brands
  • Experience of analysing customer, market, competitor and trading data from multiple sources to make category decisions
  • Experience of leading and developing Buyers, Assistant Buyers or an equivalent commercial team, including setting objectives and managing delivery
