Job description

For more than 50 years, Argos has been a familiar name in British retail, growing from its iconic catalogue beginnings into one of the UK's best-known digital and multichannel retailers.

While our heritage is something we're incredibly proud of, we're always looking forward. We continue to evolve how we serve our customers, combining the strength of our brand with digital innovation, technology and a convenient shopping experience that brings together online and physical retail.

It's an exciting time to join Argos. We're building on everything that has made the brand successful while continuing to transform for the future. Whatever your role, you'll have the opportunity to shape what comes next and play your part in the next chapter of an iconic British brand.

Location: London, Coventry or Manchester Store Support Centre & Home - colleagues go into the office 1-2 days per week on average.

About the team

The Tax and Treasury team works across Finance and the wider business to protect value, maintain effective tax controls and support well-informed decisions. Within the team, Corporate Tax activity covers compliance, tax accounting, reporting, payments and technical analysis. This role offers broad exposure to reporting, business change and significant transactions, alongside the opportunity to work with Finance colleagues, auditors and HMRC.

More about the role

As Direct Tax Accountant, you will support the delivery of accurate, timely and well-controlled Corporate Tax compliance and reporting. You will prepare UK Corporation Tax returns, computations, supporting schedules, claims and elections for companies, as well as quarterly payment calculations and information used for tax payments, refunds and cash-tax forecasting.

Your day-to-day work will include preparing current and deferred tax information for the Annual Report and Accounts, subsidiary statutory accounts, forecasts and budgets. You will maintain reconciliations, records and audit evidence, support transfer pricing documentation and compliance, and help deliver relevant reporting requirements including Corporate Interest Restriction, Country-by-Country Reporting and Pillar Two. You will also research technical issues, support HMRC and audit enquiries, coordinate data for business change or significant transactions, and improve Corporate Tax processes, controls, documentation, data quality and technology use.

More about you

You will bring practical knowledge of UK Corporation Tax and tax accounting principles, with demonstrable experience of preparing Corporation Tax computations, returns, payments and supporting documentation. You will understand statutory reporting, current and deferred tax, audit evidence and financial controls, and be able to reconcile detailed data accurately across multiple reporting requirements.

You will be able to research technical tax matters and translate findings into clear, practical guidance for non-tax stakeholders. An organised approach to competing deadlines, collaborative working style and evidence-based judgement will help you succeed. You will hold, or be making substantial progress towards, a relevant professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CTA, or an equivalent qualification.

  • A relevant professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CTA, an equivalent qualification, or substantial progress towards qualification.
  • Demonstrable experience of preparing UK Corporation Tax computations, returns, payment calculations and supporting documentation.
  • Practical knowledge of tax accounting, including current tax, deferred tax, statutory reporting, reconciliations and audit evidence.
  • Evidence of researching Corporate Tax issues and communicating clear, practical guidance to Finance or other non-tax stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to plan and deliver accurate tax compliance or reporting outputs across multiple documented deadlines.
