Hillarys Celebrates Black History Month with the #MyNameIs Campaign to Promote Respect, Inclusion, and Understanding

Black History Month

This October, in celebration of Black History Month, Hillarys proudly launched the #MyNameIs campaign—an impactful initiative aimed at fostering respect, inclusion, and understanding in workplaces and communities through the correct pronunciation of names.

Developed by Race Equality Matters, the campaign highlights the cultural, personal, and familial significance that names carry, and invites individuals and organisations to take steps that ensure names are spoken correctly.

In today’s diverse society, names represent identity, heritage, and belonging. Yet for many, names are often mispronounced or even dismissed, which can lead to feelings of being disrespected, undervalued, or overlooked. #MyNameIs addresses this issue by encouraging the use of phonetic spelling in email signatures, social media profiles, and personal introductions. This small, intentional act acknowledges individual identities, fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect.

Race Equality Matters created #MyNameIs to address the often-overlooked issue of name mispronunciation and the exclusion it can cause. A name is a powerful connection to one’s background and community, and failing to pronounce it correctly can create an environment where people feel they don’t fully belong. In workplace settings, this oversight can impact morale, inclusivity, and team dynamics.

#MyNameIs aims to normalise using phonetic spellings, making it easier for people to address others correctly and respectfully. This simple tool empowers organisations and individuals to promote respect for diverse identities in everyday interactions, with the hope that it becomes a norm across workplaces and communities.

Since launching the campaign on October 1st, the response from Hillarys employees has been overwhelmingly positive. The campaign resonates deeply with the team, reinforcing the company’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. #MyNameIs is particularly significant during Black History Month, when reflecting on and honouring the contributions of Black communities is essential.

To ensure lasting impact, Hillarys has appointed Ambassadors to promote #MyNameIs internally and explore ways to expand the initiative within the company and beyond. By supporting #MyNameIs, Hillarys aims to create meaningful change that extends beyond Black History Month, ensuring everyone’s name—and identity—is respected.

The Importance of Pronouncing Names Correctly

For many people, hearing their name pronounced correctly is a small yet powerful validation of their identity. Studies show that correct name pronunciation can lead to greater job satisfaction, social belonging, and well-being. Conversely, frequent mispronunciations can leave individuals feeling marginalised, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.

Looking Forward: Expanding #MyNameIs

With the positive reception of #MyNameIs, Hillarys and its Ambassadors are working to expand the campaign’s reach. Plans include hosting workshops, developing educational resources, and exploring partnerships to promote correct name pronunciation in wider community and social settings.

#MyNameIs serves as a reminder that true inclusivity begins with respect at a fundamental level. Through this campaign, Hillarys aims to create a lasting legacy of respect and understanding—values that are essential in our multicultural society and that embody the spirit of Black History Month.
