Black History Month

In today's corporate world, diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords; they are fundamental values that organisations strive to uphold. One key aspect of fostering a truly inclusive workplace is the presence of employee inclusion networks. I’m proud to co-chair the Black Employee Network (BEN) at Sopra Steria, where our mission is not just about promoting diversity and inclusivity, but also creating an environment where equity and equality flourish, enabling each of us to thrive.

Sopra Steria has been at the forefront of promoting diversity and inclusion by providing platforms for the voices of the underrepresented to be heard. This year, we celebrated World Culture Day in May. It was an opportunity for me to represent my culture and speak passionately about the need to have a diverse and inclusive organisation to foster organisational growth and productivity.

Black History Month

October is Black History Month and the theme for this year is Saluting our Sisters. To me, this means taking time to celebrate the achievements of Black women and their talents in our society, both past and present. It means providing a platform to elevate the voices of Black women. Coming from an under-represented community where the voices of women are culturally marginalised, it evokes a sense of pride and gratitude within me. It is more than just a commemoration. It recognises the efforts of Black women who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes and have been instrumental to shaping history.

Now, you might ask, "What about Black men?". It's a valid question.

The truth is that the celebration of Black women does not diminish or overshadow the significance of Black men in history. Rather, it complements it. Throughout history, Black women often worked behind the scenes, their voices not as prominently featured. I would say, by celebrating our sisters, it strengthens our collective identity and commitment to equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Conclusion

Organisations can play a significant role in supporting socio-cultural initiatives and inclusive networks like BEN. By listening to and learning from their people, employers can benefit from diversity of thought and perspective and ensure they’re providing an inclusive and equitable workplace where all people can thrive.
