Job description

Job summary

Across government, analytics engineering is playing an increasingly important role in transforming how organisations use data to inform decisions, deliver insight and enable digital services. By structuring, modelling and optimising data for analysis, analytics engineers ensure that data is accessible, reliable and aligned with business needs. Ofgem plays a vital role in the UKs energy system, protecting consumers and enabling a more secure, fair and sustainable energy future, and strong analytics engineering capability is central to unlocking the value of data.

Ofgem is on an ambitious transformation journey. Within the Digital, Data and Security Services (DDSS) directorate, we are building modern data platforms and analytical capabilities that support data-driven decision-making across the organisation. As our data maturity grows, there is an increasing need to ensure that data is structured effectively, enabling analytics, AI and business intelligence at scale.

As a Lead Analytics Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping how data is structured, modelled and consumed across Ofgem. You will lead the design and implementation of analytical data models, working closely with stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams to ensure data supports both operational and strategic needs. You will define standards, drive best practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of data transformation and modelling processes.

This is a senior, hands-on technical role that combines data engineering, analytics and stakeholder engagement. You will work across complex data environments, ensuring that data is optimised for use while maintaining quality, consistency and governance.

Job description

You will be responsible for:
  • Leading the design, build and maintenance of analytical data models that support reporting, analytics, AI and business intelligence.
  • Working with stakeholders to understand business processes and translate requirements into effective data structures and models.
  • Developing and maintaining data transformation standards across platforms such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse and related technologies.
  • Ensuring data quality, consistency and interoperability, enabling reuse and effective analysis across the organisation.
  • Collaborating with data engineers, data scientists and analysts to ensure alignment between platform design and analytical needs.
  • Driving continuous improvement in data modelling, transformation and analytics engineering practices.
  • Establishing and maintaining standards for documentation, ensuring transparency and maintainability of data solutions.
  • Supporting metadata management, ensuring that data assets are discoverable, well-defined and effectively governed.
  • Identifying and resolving issues within data pipelines and models, implementing preventative measures and optimisations.
  • Providing technical leadership and guidance to colleagues, promoting best practice and building capability across teams.

We are looking for:

A technically strong and analytically minded professional who can lead the development of robust, scalable data models in a modern cloud environment. You will bring experience in analytics engineering or data engineering, alongside the ability to work closely with stakeholders to deliver practical solutions.

You may come from a data engineering, analytics or BI background, but you will demonstrate:
  • Experience designing and optimising complex data models in a cloud-based environment
  • Strong experience with tools such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics or equivalent platforms
  • Experience working with programming languages such as Python and SQL
  • Knowledge of data transformation, modelling and metadata management practices
  • The ability to balance technical design with business needs and stakeholder requirements
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear, actionable insights
  • Experience in government or regulated environments, and in supporting analytics, AI or business intelligence use cases, would be beneficial.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping how Ofgem uses data to support decision-making and innovation. You will ensure that data is structured and accessible in a way that enables insight, driving value across the organisation at a time when data capability has never been more important.
