Please note this role is employed directly by Birkbeck Students' Union and not Birkbeck, University of London.

Atkinson HR is pleased to be supporting Birkbeck Students' Union (BBKSU) in the recruitment of their next Union Director.

Birkbeck Students' Union is a student-led, democratic organisation representing and supporting students at Birkbeck, University of London. This is an exciting opportunity to join a relatively small organisation with an ambitious agenda to strengthen its effectiveness, reach and impact across a diverse student community.

About the Role

As Union Director, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for BBKSU, working closely with elected Student Officers and the Board of Trustees to deliver organisational priorities and achieve meaningful outcomes for students.

You will lead on organisational planning, finance, governance, risk, compliance and people management, ensuring the Union is sustainable, well governed and equipped to deliver its ambitions. You will support and develop elected Officers and student representatives, enabling them to fulfil their democratic mandates and ensure student voice remains at the heart of decision-making.

You will also build strong relationships with senior colleagues across Birkbeck and external partners, while identifying opportunities for partnership, fundraising and organisational development.

This is a hands-on leadership role in a small organisation, requiring someone who can move confidently between strategic thinking and practical problem-solving.

About You

BBKSU are looking for an experienced and thoughtful senior leader with a track record of leading teams, delivering organisational strategy and managing complex operational responsibilities. You will bring strong financial, governance, risk and compliance experience, alongside the ability to work effectively with Boards and senior stakeholders.

You will understand and value democratic, student-led organisations and be able to empower elected representatives while respecting their mandates. You will be an inclusive and collaborative people leader, able to build a culture of accountability, development and high performance, while supporting colleagues through change.

Above all, you will have a genuine commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and a passion for student voice and the student experience. You will be approachable, credible and comfortable navigating ambiguity, with the judgement and confidence to provide constructive challenge and make things happen.
