Post Title: Technical Officer (Clinical Skills)

SBU/Department: Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (Technical)

FTE: 0.6FTE - 3 days per week - Predominantly Wednesday-Friday

Duration of Contract: Permanent

Annual Leave: 25 days pro rata plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Location: College Lane Campus & Meridian House

The Technical Team in the School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences supports a wide and diverse range of subjects including Allied Health Professions, Nursing Health and Wellbeing, Sports Science, Pharmacy, Biosciences, Psychology, Geography, Environment and Planning. Highly skilled technical staff are organized into small specialist teams, who work together alongside academic and research staff.

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful applicant will support students studying Adult, Child, Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing and Midwifery, Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Radiography, Diagnostic Radiotherapy and Social Work. You will be responsible for the preparation of practical teaching equipment including, full-body manikins, part-task skills trainers, anatomy models and medical equipment both real and simulated. This will include cleaning and tidying of equipment and facilities and the appropriate disposal of materials after sessions. You will ensure that all equipment is in good condition, safe to use and fit for purpose. You will also contribute to the maintenance of equipment inventories and ensure that health and safety practices are implemented and observed.

You will work closely with academics and other technical staff and have contact with both undergraduate and postgraduate students at all stages of their learning.

Skills and experience required

An articulate and good communicator, and a team player, showing good initiative and being able to work independently when necessary. You will be able to follow detailed instructions comprehensively and be flexible and reliable to team and workload requirements. A proactive approach, with good problem-solving skills and an ability to prioritise work-loads are essential as are good IT skills and timekeeping.

You will be physically fit and be able to complete regular manual handling tasks.

Practical experience of working in a healthcare or teaching environment in a technical role would be of benefit.

Qualifications required

Educated with a minimum of five GCSEs or equivalents, including Mathematics and English at grade D or above.
