Job description

A Software Engineer is required to join the R&D Interlockings department. They will be expected to undertake requirements analysis, architecture and design in a core team of software engineers in a dynamic development environment providing high value early life-cycle development capability for both safety-critical and safety-related software developments. The focus of the team will be on producing software solutions whilst performing all parts of the development life-cycle. The team will use a mix of traditional and agile techniques to manage risk and ensure on-time delivery of quality software.

What are my responsibilities?

  • Requirements analysis and specification of high-level software design
  • Development and implementation of software design
  • Code, unit test and integration test of software systems
  • Development of requirements, design and test specifications
  • Reporting on progress

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • Proficient in one or more high-level object-oriented programming languages e.g. C++/Java (essential)
  • Proficient in developing and debugging multi-threaded applications (essential)
  • Self-motivated, adaptable and able to learn quickly (essential)
  • Able to work to tight timescales (essential)
  • Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills (essential)
  • Familiarity with agile software development and continuous integration techniques
  • Knowledge of software architectures, best practices and object orientated design
  • Knowledge in using UML for software design
  • Knowledge of one or more modern scripting languages e.g. Perl or Python
  • Knowledge of one or more low-level procedural programming languages e.g. C.
  • Experience of configuration management and software control practices
  • Knowledge of developing safety-critical and safety-related software, e.g. to CENELEC standards
  • Willing to occasionally travel overseas
