Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Post holder will also have opportunity to be fully conversant with Clinical Governance process and will contribute to Departmental Clinical Governance.

There are weekly teaching sessions organised where attendance would be expected (unless on leave or working night shifts).

In line with Trust policy, study leave will be provided for the post holder to pursue higher qualifications related to EM as well as some monies towards partly funding of life support courses.

The Emergency Department provides a Consultant-led service; post holders will form an integral part of the multidisciplinary team that provides Emergency Services. As part of this responsibility, the team, will, be involved in the planning and development of emergency care and the development of an acute assessment unit.

Together with the departmental management team, the post-holder will plan and develop the department's Major and CBRN Incident Response Plans and will participate in exercises to test and develop these plans.

Person specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full MRCEM
  • Full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold current license to practice
  • Evidence of 5 years of medical experience postgraduate
  • Previous Emergency Medicine experience


Desirable criteria
  • MRCS or MRCP
  • Evidence of 36 months training at CT1, CT2 and CT3 level in the specialties that make up the ACCS and CT3 EM programme but must include a minimum of 6 months in Emergency Medicine and a minimum of 3 months in specialties other than Emergency Medicine. If MSK has not been completed, then a minimum of 9 months EM is required
  • ACCS EM competences at Core Trainee level Programme or equivalent


Knowledge/Skills/Clinical Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation Competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation
  • Evidence of completion of at least two Life Support course i.e., ALS, ATLS or APLS/EPLS
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement. Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Evidence of completion of short/training courses relevant to EM e.g., airway or ultrasound


Desirable criteria
  • Specialties outside acute care common stem training (where not laboratory based), such as - Medical specialties e.g., cardiology, geriatric medicine, and respiratory medicine - Surgical specialties, such as Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, Plastic, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, General or Oral & Maxillofacial surgery.
  • Instructor status in any of life support courses


Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical governance e.g., handling a complaint, incident reporting
  • Evidence of leading on clinical audit


Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of having led on a patient safety issue
  • Evidence that personal audit has led to change of practice


Academic / Research / Teaching Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of academic endeavour such as either a completed research project, published paper, clinical topic review, critical appraisal, evidence-based medicine guidelines or publication
  • Evidence of interest and experience in teaching


Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, or additional evidence-based medicine & e-learning modules
  • Evidence of contribution to departmental guidelines
  • Evidence of active participation in research
  • Publications in peer review journals, presentations at academic meetings or poster presentations
  • Evidence of completion of a teaching course

  • Demonstrates interest and realistic insight into emergency medicine
  • Demonstrates self-awareness & ability to accept feedback
  • Evidence of achievement relevant to emergency medicine within and outside of medicine


Disclosure & Barring Check Fee

Where your role requires a DBS check, the Trust will pay the fee upfront and reclaim the cost (including a £5 admin fee) from your first month's salary. Volunteers are exempt.
