Detailed job description and main responsibilities - Strategic & Educational Leadership: Chair the Medical Education Committee, serve as the primary liaison with the NHSE Regional Team, and advocate for medical/dental training priorities at Trust Board level.
- Culture & Diversity Advocacy: Actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in education delivery, staff recruitment, and professional development across all clinical teams.
- Quality Assurance & GMC Compliance: Ensure all clinical trainers meet GMC Standards for Trainers, manage local preparation for external monitoring visits, and proactively action findings from annual GMC Trainee and Trainer surveys.
- Trainee & Pastoral Support: Oversee frameworks for workplace-based assessments, ensure every trainee has named clinical/educational supervisors, and provide robust pastoral support and career guidance.
- Performance & Risk Management: Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer to identify, support, and manage underperforming practitioners and resolve training delivery challenges.
- Operational & Rota Collaboration: Partner with Medical Staffing and clinical teams to enhance the junior doctor experience, eliminate onboarding friction, and protect training time from service pressures.
- Centre & Budgetary Management: Oversee the operational delivery of the Postgraduate & Undergraduate Education Centre, supervise simulation facilities, and manage the medical and dental education tariff budget.
Person specificationshortlisting and interview Essential criteria - GMC full registration and license to practice. Specialist (Consultant/Specialist/SAS Doctor) or General Practitioner registration for a minimum of five years.
- Previous experience in a senior medical education role (e.g. College Tutor).
- Evidence of current training in: • Train the trainer • Fairer feedback • Reflective Practice • Relevant workplace-based assessments • Relevant portfolio • GMP 2024 and its role in respectful workplace inc. EDI, Sexual Safety
- Proven ability to manage performance issues in trainees or resolve delivery challenges faced by trainers.
- Experience of monitoring education delivery against training standards (GMC).
- Clear knowledge of GMC quality assurance frameworks, training standards, and UK postgraduate curricula.
- Comprehensive understanding of the NHSE Resident Doctor 10 Point Plan and current modern medical education priorities
Desirable criteria - Higher degree. Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Medical Education.
- Experience of working with Health Education East of England (formerly the Postgraduate Deanery) - now part of NHSE.
- Understanding and commitment to uses of IT in education ideally with experience of deploying digital education platforms, simulation technologies, and/or remote learning ecosystems
