Job summary

As a Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Gender Affirmation Surgery (GAS), the post-holder will have demonstrated expertise in undertaking primary and revision masculinising lower surgery and masculinising top surgery. Additionally, the successful candidate requires skills to expand our masculinising lower surgery programme, which has a focus pedicled and free-flap phalloplasty service. The post holder must be committed to research and innovation in the field of gender surgery.

The role will require close working with other colleagues in the Trust as well as allied organisations as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to quality improvement, research and management of the service. It is anticipated that the post-holder will engage in specific management tasks and contribute to service meetings as required.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have the following duties:

Deliver outpatient clinics, diagnostic procedures and theatre lists to support the service

Attendance at MDT meetings

Participation in audit, research and governance activities of the department

Ensure compliance with national commissioning standards and waiting time targets

Support subspecialisation in the department by appropriate cross referral to colleagues

Provide consultant care at an early stage to patients presenting to secondary care with presumed urological complications of gender surgery

Contribute to the routine care of GAS inpatients, rotating this responsibility with colleagues.

To promote early and safe discharge of patients

Strong commitment to the organisation and delivery of training

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a.Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
  • FRCS (Plast) or equivalent experience
Experience

Essential

  • Large volume experience in primary and revision masculinising chest surgery
  • Evidence of broad based training in general plastic and reconstructive surgery and free flap surgery, including microsurgery
  • Experience of setting up and delivering microsurgical plastics services
Desirable

  • Experience of developing patient centred healthcare, especially for individuals with increased vulnerability and /or complexity
Skills and knowledge

Essential

  • Good understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
  • Knowledge of the needs of LGBTQI+ service users
