Job summary

BarnsleyHospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint twoenthusiastic Consultant Paediatricians with a special interest that complementsour department tojoin our team of eleven consultant paediatricians. The post holder will providelocal general paediatrics and neonatology care for Barnsley and will also takepart in hot week service.

This post will support the Paediatricdepartment in Quality Improvement and standards as per RCPCH guidelines and aspart of the Clinical Business Unit (CBU) along with meeting other CBUrequirements within Paediatrics.

Our Paediatric ward was refurbished in 2021and we have a newly modernised Childrens Assessment Unit (CAU) located next toour Emergency Department. The Paediatric ward currently has 8 beds and CAU 9beds.

We have a level 2 Neonatal unit with 14 cotscomprising of 2 ITU, 3 HDU and 9 Special care.

This post is a permanent position andcomprises of the following: 1:10 hot ward weeks, 1:10 Neonates ward cover, 1:10weekend on call, 1:10 on call (Monday to Thursday) resident until 22:00 hrs andthen non-resident and 2 outpatient clinics a week outside of hot weeks.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a motivated, forward-thinking Consultant who is eager to:
  • Lead and innovate within our services.
  • Contribute to service development and re-evaluation.
  • Work collaboratively within a supportive, highly skilled multidisciplinary team (providing support and advice to specialist nurses, resident doctors) and regional networks.
  • Actively contributes to the paediatric hot week rota, providing senior clinical leadership, and ensuring high-quality patient care during periods of increased service demand.
  • The post holder will maintain the highest clinical standards in general paediatric and neonatology by ensuring responsibility for their own continuing medical education and professional development.
  • The successful candidate will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues in the day-to-day management of the Paediatric Department, actively contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and audit programmes, while supporting the education, training and professional development of junior doctors, medical students, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
