Balancing Parenthood and a Career in the Civil Service: Ursula’s Story
Category: Gender (Equality & Identity), Dependency (Parenting & Carers)
From flexible working hours to pursuing a degree apprenticeship, Ursula shares how the Civil Service has provided the support and security she needs to thrive both as a parent and a professional within the Ministry of Defence.

How long have you been a Civil Servant?
I’ve been a Civil Servant for almost seven years.
What attracted you to a career in the Civil Service?
The flexibility was a big draw. I originally started full-time, but the Civil Service has supported me in reducing my hours to better manage my work-life balance with my children and family. I was also attracted by the wide range of opportunities for progression, job security, and the excellent pension and benefits.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love the variety, working with different people, developing new skills, and gaining knowledge about the Army. I’m about to complete my Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA), which has been a fantastic opportunity. The flexibility, supportive line management, and the chance to make a meaningful difference make this role truly rewarding.
