Reflecting on My Civil Service Journey

Career & Talent Development

I embarked on my Civil Service journey in June 2024 as a Personal Assistant. Coming from a family deeply rooted in public service, my father served in the military, and my sister has dedicated 20 years to the Civil Service. I already appreciated the value and purpose of working in this organisation.

What drew me most to the Civil Service was the promise of a flexible work-life balance. After years in Education, where annual leave and working patterns were rigidly structured, this was a refreshing change. Additionally, the wealth of opportunities for self-development and the variety of roles available were incredibly appealing. I knew I would have the chance to learn from the experiences of others and grow both personally and professionally.

Today, I work in recruitment, a role that has broadened my understanding of the vast array of careers within the Civil Service. I love being part of a small, dedicated team that supports the wider business area. The most rewarding aspect of my role is helping new starters begin their own journeys with confidence and enthusiasm.

For anyone considering a career in the Civil Service, my advice is simple: keep an open mind and embrace every opportunity that comes your way. The Civil Service offers a world of possibilities, and you never know where your journey might take you.
