Disability at DWP

The Civil Service embraces diversity and promotes equal opportunities. As such DWP is a Disability Confident Leader, demonstrating the departmental commitment to attracting, recruiting and retaining disabled people and supporting them in achieving their full potential. As a Disability Confident Leader, we will normally offer an interview to disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the role. Applicants with disabilities and long-term conditions can opt-in to this scheme on the application form.

Reasonable Adjustments

DWP is committed to making reasonable adjustments for disabled candidates who may require additional help throughout the application process. Adjustments to the recruitment process can vary, and may include:

  • conducting interviews in a suitable location which doesn’t disadvantage the candidate, for example on the ground floor
  • written tests instead of a computer assessment
  • giving applicants time to arrange for an interpreter at assessment centre/interviews and
  • being accompanied by an interpreter
  • larger print for written information
  • flexibility around the time and location of an interview.

You will be asked at the initial application stage if you require a reasonable adjustment. More information regarding reasonable adjustments for online tests can be found on this webpage.

Workplace Adjustments

DWP provides workplace adjustments through a flexible, person-centred approach to remove barriers and enable disabled candidates and employees to work effectively. Colleagues can discuss and request adjustments, including specialist furniture and tailored equipment such as ergonomic desk items and assistive tools. DWP has specialist teams, including the Centralised Workplace Adjustments Team, to ensure adjustments are considered consistently and implemented effectively to enable colleagues to complete the tasks required in their role.
