Wellcome Trust

Wellcome Trust

We’re a global charitable foundation, both politically and financially independent. We support scientists and researchers, take on big problems, fuel imaginations, and spark debate.

We value breadth and depth in the activities we support.

We remain true to the vision and values of our founder, Sir Henry Wellcome, a medical entrepreneur, collector and philanthropist. Our work today reflects the amazing breadth of Henry’s interests, and his belief that science and research expand knowledge by testing and investigating ideas. Our governance is based on an updated version of his will.

Our funding supports over 14,000 people in more than 70 countries. In the next five years, we aim to spend up to £5 billion helping thousands of curious, passionate people all over the world explore ideas in science, population health, medical innovation, the humanities and social sciences and public engagement.

More about Wellcome Trust

Our Values

We use four principles to help inform and guide the way in which we undertake our work, both internally and externally.

  • Act boldly: This means having the confidence to make decisions, and knowing when to act and when to consult. Taking responsibility - for what we do and for getting things done. Supporting each other to deliver our best and advance the Trust's goals.
  • Savour the mix: This means being open to the widest mix of ideas, expertise and thinking. Encouraging diversity, forging new relationships and drawing on their power.
  • Defy expectations: This means being ambitious for ourselves and our mission. Using the freedom to think creatively, to push that bit further - and ask why not. Seizing opportunities to challenge ourselves, learning from our mistakes.
  • Enjoy the challenge: This means bringing our passion to the work we do, helping others do the same. Living Wellcome's spirit, riding the ups and downs, and having an impact. Being ourselves and having fun while we do it.

Diversity

We want every great idea that could improve health to thrive. But we miss out when people feel science isn’t for them, or leave research careers because of barriers they face.

We’re committed to removing those barriers and making science and health research open to anyone with a great idea.

There’s no quick fix. Creating an inclusive culture where people feel they can participate and contribute means making lots of small changes that add up to more than the sum of their parts. That’s why we’re calling for change in three areas.

As one of the biggest funders of science and research in the UK, we want to lead by example.

We know we’re not as inclusive as we could be. We’re enhancing our recruitment process, introducing bias awareness training, and investing in a seed fund to support people to develop their own ideas for making Wellcome more inclusive.
