Leon’s story

Hello, my name is Leon, and i wanted to give a bit of an insight, into the role of being a vehicle mechanic for the ministry of defence and share a behindthe-scenes look at my role, the variety of vehicles I work on, the opportunities I’ve had, and why I genuinely enjoy what I do. So, whether you’re curious about the job or considering a similar career, here’s a glimpse into my day-to-day life and what makes this role so rewarding!

The Vehicles I Work With

In my role, I get to work on a wide range of military vehicles, from heavily armoured ones to light vehicles. That includes MLRS, Warriors, AS90s, Land Rovers, Man trucks and plenty of other specialist kit.

A Day in the Life of a MOD Vehicle Mechanic

No two days are the same, which makes the job interesting and keeps me on my toes. On a day-to-day basis, i spend my time inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vehicles so they’re safe and ready for use/training. That can mean anything from mileage-based servicing and fault finding, to more technical problem solving on mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic systems. I also work closely with my colleagues, exchanging knowledge and helping each other out, to get the job done to a high standard. 

Training, Courses, and Career Development

There are plenty of chances to progress and learn new things too. I've been able to complete courses like diversity and inclusion practitioner, and manual handling trainer. As well as picking up more in-depth mechanical knowledge specific to MLRS, AS90 and other vehicles I work on.

Work–Life Balance and Benefits

Probably the thing I value most is the balance this job offers. For example, flexible working, which for me personally is a massive help, having a small child. We also get the chance to volunteer, outstanding pension contribution and even an extra day's holiday each year (up to a maximum of five days in total). It really helps keep work and life balanced.

Team Culture and Extra Opportunities

The people I work with make a huge difference as well. The management and other staff are supportive and a great laugh, and we often have regular socials, meals out, and team building days that brings everyone together. There are also extra opportunities, like recently we were asked if we'd like to train on the new MLRS variant in America (if we wanted to), Also doing “on call” (recovery) to earn extra money while supporting training at 14REG. It's never pressured, but nice to have those opportunities available.

Why I Love My Job

All in all, it's a Job that gives me variety, growth, flexibility, and a great bunch of people around me, which makes it something i really enjoy doing. I can honestly say, I enjoy my job.
