Volunteering & Charity Work at DWP

Category: Social Responsibility (Charity/ Volunteering/Environmentalism)

Corporate Social Responsibility

Paul, who works in one of our pension centres, who is a qualified British Triathlon level 2 coach and gives back to the community by coaching groups and club members in the Perth area to achieve their goals both nationally and internationally. Paul has already competed in the Inverness Half Marathon in March 2022 and has entered the Perth 10k in August, and the Ironman Weymouth 70.3 in September, all in the name of raising money for the Lifeboat Fund.

The DWP actively supports volunteering and is committed to bringing real benefits to the local community, but we’re also keen to support our colleague’s personal development.

We understand that through volunteering, our colleagues gain:

  • Opportunity to act on an issue they care about
  • Insight into the lives of our customers and the communities we serve
  • A rewarding experience
  • Pride from making a difference

The organisations our colleagues support gain:

  • Help to carry out their work
  • Skills and knowledge you share
  • Perspective and new ideas
  • To develop long-term partnerships with DWP

Our colleagues may be allowed paid time off for public service duties, for example to be a Magistrate, or to provide voluntary services to the local community.

National Volunteering Week 2022 was between 1st June – 7th June and we celebrated our colleagues who give their time to volunteering. We heard some touching stories from people volunteering at hospices, to Girlguiding and the Royal Marine Cadets, to trustee governors at schools.

Fundraising for the Lifeboat Fund

Every year we in DWP do wonderful work to support charities. This includes the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), one of the charities the Civil Service supports. We support RNLI sites across the UK, and our appeal supports sites to deliver the Swim Safe Initiative.

All the money we raise goes directly to RNLI projects, and between 2020-2021 we’ve raised £16,000 towards a new lifeboat for the RNLI  which was named in honour of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. This year we are wanting to raise even more.

Some of our colleagues this year are taking on amazing challenges to achieve this, including Paul, who works in one of our pension centres, who is a qualified British Triathlon level 2 coach and gives back to the community by coaching groups and club members in the Perth area to achieve their goals both nationally and internationally. Paul has already competed in the Inverness Half Marathon in March 2022 and has entered the Perth 10k in August, and the Ironman Weymouth 70.3 in September, all in the name of raising money for the Lifeboat Fund.
