For International Men’s Day 2017, UK Athletics took part in raising awareness by adressing some of issues men and boys face. This leaflet circulated around the workplace in hopes that employees will be educated further in these important matters. In the UK, National Men's day is on 19th November every year – it is celebrated around the world in at least 60 countries.
Every year, International Men’s Day in the UK is marked by more and more women, men and organisations across the country. This year there are over 65 events, campaigns and celebrations across November from a Parliamentary debate to community events, health days, business events, student events, political events, album launches, media debates, conferences, competitions, comedy nights and fundraisers – the most anywhere in the world. There is something for everyone!
The global theme for 2017 is Celebrating Men and Boys in all their Diversity and the focus remains on how we can make a difference to men and boys, and, how we can give men and boys better life chances by addressing some of the issues that affect Men and Boys such as:
The high male suicide rate
The challenges faced by boys and men at all stages of education including attainment
Men’s health, shorter life expectancy and workplace deaths
The challenges faced by the most marginalised men and boys in society (for instance, homeless men, boys in care and the high rate of male deaths in custody)
Male victims of violence, including sexual violence
The challenges faced by men as parents, particularly new fathers and separated fathers
Male victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based crime, stalking and slavery
The negative portrayal of men, boys and fathers
What can you do? International Men’s Day in the UK provides a fantastic opportunity for you to:
Highlight some serious issues affecting men and boys and their wellbeing
Make a difference to men and boys’ lives
Celebrate Britain’s men and boys in all their diversity
