UK Athletics: ‘COACH’ Art Exhibition

Category: Training & Development

Black, Asian & Minority (BAME)

Last week VERCIDA were invited to attend the UK Athletics ‘COACH’ art exhibition. It was an inspiring evening filled with photographs showcasing the UK Black and Asian track & field coaches in celebration of Black History Month. The evening started with a delightful welcome from Donna Fraser (UK Athletics Vice President and Equality, Diversity & Engagement Lead) who spoke of the importance of coaches and their constant support (and we can definitely take her word for it as she has an impressive record; being a former athlete herself). Informing us in a very personal moment that she was dedicating this project to her late coach; Ayo Falola.

A few speeches followed, including one by Niels de Vos, the Chief Executive at UK Athletics, who spoke about how integral it is to keep supporting BAME coaches in order to inspire new generations. The deputy Major for Social Integration, Social Mobility and Community Engagement; Mathew Ryder, also took delight in supporting UK Athletics and their work in bringing the achievements of BAME coaches to the forefront of society making sure to highlight the value of coaches as mentors and role models. It was not too long after this that the photos were revealed, which portrayed the coaches and their athletes looking energetic and natural whilst training. The COACH project included 32 committed and passionate coaches across the UK.

All in all, a wonderful event with an evocative message of inclusion and social integration all of which wouldn’t have been possible without the creative and fervent Ernest Simons (Photographer) and David Gorgeous (Project Manager). They both had a lovely message to convey regarding what they witnessed while they volunteered two months of their time to capture these pictures. They spoke of the selflessness, dedication and drive the coaches have in order to ensure they are the force that guides their athletes to success.

A big thank you and well done to UK Athletics and Grant Thornton for creating and hosting such a brilliant event.

You can see the exhibition in full at City Hall, London between 28th November to 15th December 2017. For more dates on when the exhibition is on display at a location near you please visit the UK Athletics website.
