The Meaning of Bright Colours at Pride: Tasting the Rainbow

Category: LGBTQIA+ (Sexual Orientation)

LGBTQ+

You’ll notice that Pride is full of bright, bold colours — on flags, in events, and across organisations that want to show their support to the LGBTQ+ community. That’s not accidental.

The original rainbow Pride flag was designed in the late 1970s as a symbol of visibility and inclusion. Each colour stands for something — from life and healing to nature and spirit — and together, they reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.

Pride Colours

Bright colours make a statement. They’ve always been used to push back against invisibility, shame, and silence — and to create space for people to be seen and accepted for who they are. In short, they stand for openness, pride, and solidarity.

Skittles colours

To show our support this year, on 28 June, we’ll be handing out Skittles across our sites to all colleagues. It’s a small gesture, but one that says we recognise the importance of being visible and inclusive — and we want everyone here to feel safe and welcome.

You can also get involved by picking up a Pride Pin to add to your lanyard – they will be available across the different sites in receptions or with the site leader.

Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or are an ally, you’re encouraged to wear a badge, enjoy the sweets, and take a moment to reflect on why Pride still matters. Being part of a supportive workplace means celebrating difference, respecting each other, and standing up for equality — not just during Pride, but all year round.
