The annual Working Mother 50 Best Law Firms for Women list has been announced for 2017 and includes two of our members: Norton Rose Fulbright and Reed Smith LLP. The list highlights the top U.S law firms that are the best at creating strategies to retain and promote women lawyers. All of the firms featuring on the list have achieved an average of 20 per cent of their equity partners being women, and hold over a quarter of seats on both executive and finance committees.
The firms who made the final cut are also highly commended within the industry for their flexible working and parental leave policies. That is because these policies, which can include flexible hours, reduced hours and the option to work from home, are particularly attractive to mums (and dads) who wish to manage their home life whilst maintaining their careers.
Norton Rose Fulbright featured on the list for their work to create a Career Strategies Programme, which gives female senior associates the knowledge, confidence and support they need to attain partner level. Led by women’s development experts, all newly promoted female partners have participated in the programme, which is a testament to its success. Plus, their WIN-ning Business panel series has given attorneys new ways to move up professionally and the firm now has 21% of their equity partners and 16% of their non-equity partners being women.
Reed Smith also made the cut due to the implementation of “mobile offices” that give attorneys a place to work on the go or when they need more amenities than their home offices provide, as well as annualised and reduced-hours working arrangements, which make work easier for lawyer mums (and dads). 42% of Reed Smith’s leadership positions are held by women, with 21% of equity partners and 23% of non-equity partners being women.
