T-Systems Head of Diversity & Inclusion, Claire Parker MCIPD has won the HR International Award for her work encouraging young school girls into a career in technology through the Modern Muse programme. Claire received the award at an International HR convention, which recognised the hard work of HR professionals from offices across the world.
Claire commented on winning the award, “I was very fortunate to win the HR International Award for 2017 today. This was a complete shock in front of 21 countries and over 400 people across the globe.”
Claire has been heavily involved in T-System’s commitment to encouraging more girls to choose technology as a career path through their partnership with Modern Muse.
Modern Muse is a not-for-profit social enterprise that aims to inspire and engage the next generation of female business leaders and entrepreneurs. Their website features a number of female role models whose stories aim to inspire, inform and motivate young women and girls into a wide range of careers they may not have considered previously.
Statistic over the last couple of years have shown that there is a particular lack of women working in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) roles. Modern Muse wishes to combat this by demonstrating that women can, and do, excel in various careers across business, science, technology, engineering and maths. By engaging with school girls below the age of 14, Modern Muse and T-Systems want to inspire them into a STEM career so that they can make informed decisions on their career as they progress into high school, university, or work experience.
Another aspect of this work is to encourage social mobility of disadvantaged young people by educating them on their career options, such as work experience, job placements, internships and apprenticeships. T-Systems offers a Start Up! Traineeship for graduates wanting to enter the industry and many internship opportunities.
Modern Muse also aims to support and facilitate communities of women within STEM careers to enable career progression and identify other role models who can encourage the next generation. Many of T-Systems female employees are also Modern Muses and attend events and talk to young girls in schools as part of a common effort to increase the number of women in STEM careers.
