From service to Sanctuary: Tristram’s story

Ex Military Personnel

At Sanctuary, we’re proud to support people who’ve served in the Armed Forces.

Tristram Channer, our Director of Technology Strategy and Architecture, spent over 17 years in the British Army, serving operationally in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. He left at the rank of Major.

Leaving the military wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one for his family.

“The Army teaches you to trust yourself,” Tristram says. “Once I realised it was no longer right for my family, the decision became clear.”

Moving to civilian life came with challenges. “You go from being a highly experienced and competent operator in one world to being a complete newbie in another,” Tristram explained.

“Understanding job roles, translating military experience, and navigating unfamiliar corporate language were all part of the journey.”

Through networking, resilience and a willingness to learn, Tristram found his way.

He joined JP Morgan’s military internship programme and started out as a Business Analyst. Over time, he moved into corporate management and leadership.

Skills that translate

Tristram’s leadership style is shaped by the values and skills he learned in the Army, where he developed a strong foundation in analysis and planning, team building and decision-making.

“Mission command taught me to empower people. You set the goal, give them the tools and let them find the best way to achieve it. And then be there to support and guide them where necessary.”

These qualities have helped him build and nurture high-performing teams at Sanctuary.

Why supporting Veterans matters

We’re proud to have achieved Silver status in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme and are committed to working towards Gold. This process is about more than recognition - it’s about living our values.

“It shows we recognise and value Service,” says Tristram. “It tells veterans we’re a Service-friendly organisation. And for our customers who’ve served, it’s a sign that we see and support them too.”

That commitment is reflected in the practical support we offer across three key areas: housing, employment and volunteering.

Veterans and service leavers can get help with housing applications, one-to-one support, and connections to charity partners who offer suitable accommodation.

We’re also looking at ways to strengthen our employment offer such as supporting veterans with job applications, interviews and tailored job trials.

These initiatives are designed to help people take their next step with confidence.

Tristram believes organisations like Sanctuary can make a real difference by taking a chance on veterans.

“Sometimes, someone just needs a shot to show what they can do. If we see potential, it’s worth investing,” he says.
