Networks of Support at DWP
Category: Gender (Equality & Identity), Training & Development
As I sit here reflecting on my recent adventure to a DWP Office in London for my first Women's Network meeting which you can sign up to on joining DWP, I can't help but feel a surge of pride and accomplishment. It's funny how what seems like a simple journey can become a metaphor for personal growth and the power of community support.

I'll be honest - I nearly didn't go. The thought of navigating London's transport system, with its maze-like tube network, filled me with dread. My partner had even offered to chaperone me, but something inside me knew I needed to follow my mentor's advice and encouragement to seek help when needed and so I took a leap of faith.
I posted a request for assistance, and to my relief, a colleague named Hazel offered to meet me at Paddington. This small act of kindness was the first domino in a series of supportive gestures that made this journey possible.
My team rallied around me, creating a safety net of contingency plans. They designated a colleague for me to call if I found myself lost or alone. Another thoughtfully downloaded and took a screenshot of a tube map for me, ensuring I had directions even without an internet connection. Before I left, my partner gave me a pep talk that bolstered my confidence for both the outward and return journeys.
The result? I made it to a different office away from my hometown and into London! The sense of achievement I felt upon arrival was indescribable.
But the day only got better from there. Meeting the joint chairs of the Women's Network, along with the strand leads for Career and Personal Development, Health, Inclusion, and Parenting, was truly inspiring. The collaborative spirit extended to our colleagues in Comms and Data, creating an atmosphere of unity and purpose.
We celebrated significant milestones, such as Emma’s Health strand and her volunteers' success in updating HR guidance around miscarriage - a crucial step forward in supporting women in the workplace. We also took time to consider feedback from our members, aligning our goals to better serve the needs of women across the organisation.
The day was a perfect blend of productivity and enjoyment with a delicious lunch at Farmer J’s.
We collaborated across all strands to plan events that will add real value to our membership, all while having a bit of fun along the way.
As I look back on this experience, I'm filled with gratitude - for the colleagues who supported me, for the Women's Network that's working tirelessly to improve conditions for women, and for my own courage in stepping out of my comfort zone.
This journey into London was more than just a meeting; it was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we support each other and face our fears head-on. I can't wait to see what we'll accomplish next.
